wow must be a mayhem with all those boats packed so close together, probably more dispersed after they reach the fishing grounds

i think the Chinese fishermen went too gungho this one time, life taken is never pretty, dead RoK CG or dead Chinese fisherman will not be pretty, each side is being wise this time, and let the crowd vent their frustrations

Actually, in Bristol Bay, the "fishing grounds" are small enough that they are grouped like that many times while fishing!

You can imagine some of the "disagreements." Add that to some areas being off limits because of habitat and preservation issues, and fishermen who violate those areas, and you can see how the Alaskan State Troopers sometimes get into some hairy situations as they try and respond to altercations and enforce the boundaries.

Well this seems reasonable enough, China demanded proper humanitarian needs, as should be provided by any civilized nation.
I agree the man should be put on trial though, at least for something like involuntary manslaughter in self defense.

Btw, does anyone know where this took place?
"Near SK borders" or within "Seoul's self-declared exclusive economic zone" is not really clear, or maybe that was the whole point.

i don't see the SK guard use any sharp object or other potentialy fatal self defense tool

This is the most misleading photo around these days.

This photo, took place nowhere near 2011 - It's an archive photo by S.Korean authorities when last month, they announced they have detered some 26 times of Chinese fisherman's break-in into the S.Korean fishing ground across the last 3 years (or decade? Not remember).

It's a breathtaking photo and a convincing photo shows "Chinese fishers resist to obey", so it was used everytime when fishing clashes occoured. - Regard this time's "stabbing to death" incident, we haven't see any on-the-spot photo yet.

This is a really complicated international issue, the place of incident is, let's say, more near North Korea than South, but for all kinds of historical and political reason, the place has been negotiated into South Korea's control. The second pic pink color area is the negotiated S.K EEZ while the same place of the blue area is China's; the purple area is supposed joint administration area. Deducting all the other natural Chinese EEZ across the East Sea and yellow sea, the negotiated way of draw the line, S.Korea got the bigger part - That's what sparks all kinds of hatrad between both side of people.

The boarding tools that SK patrol officers use can also cause fatal injuries to the occupants of the ship they board. Can't they use tear gas instead?

I frankly don't believe anything from South Korea. I saw one article that said the man who died was Special Forces. I still find the incident where their military troops shot at an airliner, thinking it was a North Korean intrusion, following the standard landing pattern into Seoul suspicious. If the the airliner went down, were they going to blame it on the North?

China is not exactly quiet on this issue.

Coast guard officer death 'isolated case'By Qin Zhongwei (China Daily)08:43, December 15, 2011 BEIJING - China believes the death of a Republic of Korea (ROK) Coast Guard officer in a clash with Chinese fishermen was an isolated incident and will not affect bilateral ties, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

At the ministry's daily news briefing, spokesman Liu Weimin once again expressed China's regret over the death of ROK Coast Guard officer Lee Cheong-ho, whose funeral was held on Wednesday.

Liu said: "This is an isolated case, and we believe it will not hurt the overall situation of the two countries' relationship."

Liu also said that the Chinese government had beefed up security outside the ROK embassy in Beijing and its consulates in other cities, after the ROK embassy in Beijing informed the ministry that a bulletproof window at the embassy was suspected of being hit by a metal ball allegedly fired from an air gun on Tuesday. Nobody was injured.

After preliminary checks at the embassy, the possibility of gunfire could be ruled out, said Liu. An investigation into the incident is continuing.

The councilor of the ROK embassy in Beijing was unavailable for comment on Wednesday.

Liu asked the ROK government to take measures to protect the safety and guarantee the smooth operation of the Chinese embassy and consulates in ROK cities.
