7/10 top movies in South Korea are Hollywood, 1/10 is from their hated Japan. Koreans prefer Spiderman, Eternals and even Japanese propaganda over Korean media.
8/10 top movies in China are Chinese, only 2 are Hollywood, and instead of superhero BS, Chinese watch F-9 which is at least somewhat Asian, directed by Justin Lin.

I was talking mainly about dramas which on average is what people mostly watch at home, not the movies. There is a problem when girls watch mostly Korean dramas, because they think Chinese TV series are mostly bad with few exceptions. A country with 50m people has that strong cultural export, how would Chinese pop culture look like when there is 1.4b ppl, unlimited budget without worrying what clowns at censor bureau would say?
I would say that movies need big budget, that's why I guess Korean movies are not selling the best in Korean cinemas, too small market.
There are few hollowood movies in China now because they've been banned in a lot cases. Last year only 20 movies were shown in China, compared to on average 50. Blockbuster are trash in most cases, no matter if its American or Chinese.

Quite a few recent big hit movies was waiting months for release, because censors were complaining. I remember reading that one big movie dissappeared from Chinese streaming sites because of censorship, maybe it was Youth 芳华, but I don't remember exactly.
Man, your friend is just into K-drama more than C-drama. To suggest that 99% of C-drama is trash speaks more about your friends preference than the actual product. I watch both and there are good K-dramas just as there are good C-dramas. Contemporary settings K-drama has it better overall compared to C-drama, but it's all becoming too corny nowadays. When it comes to historical themes, even fantasy dramas Korean dramas just can't touch the Chinese counterparts.
However, what made you think this recent cancellation has to do with Xi Jinping’s fragile little heart and not decided by the person in charge of the propaganda/entertainment department? Does Xi runs all the department in China now like Kim in N.K. because that's seems to be the implication here lol
There is good censorship and there is bad censorship. What Chinese censors need to do is to purge all those 水中贵族百岁山, 丹麦王室曲奇, 西班牙王室用油 kind of reactionary, white worshipping commercials from CCTV. Not hammering down homegrown animations like this

movies don't necessarily need big budget nor does big budget guarantee earnings. They also don't necessarily cost more than TV.

IDK what people watch at home for sure, most people just pirate it. But we can gauge interest by Google search; note that Google is both banned in China and had a miniscule market share when it wasn't.
If C drama is better than movies then South Korea is in huge trouble because their movie industry is terrible purely from an economic point of view.
Film on special hero Huang Jiguang premieres in Beijing

On Tuesday, online-only film Special-Level Hero Huang Jiguang premiered at a news conference held in Beijing, during which cast and crew members shared stories of shooting the film with the audience.
From the perspective of hero Huang Jiguang, who sacrificed his life in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53), it tells the story of how Huang joined the army, fought bravely with his companions and finally devoted his life to the country.
According to director and playwright Zhou Runze, "We want to tell the audience who Huang really was as an ordinary person, and hope the audience can forge a connection with him."
Zhang Chunyan, an official with the Beijing Municipal Radio and Television Bureau, said the film shows stories between Huang and his mother, and tells the story of his youth. It shows the destiny of a country through that of an individual, and thus it is filled with human tenderness and can take people back to the times.
The film will be released online on Oct 2.
