Showed my mother this series, she had plenty of criticisms of it about how they get the era's mannerisms (speech, thought process, behaviours, etc.) wrong and added fake subplots to entice today's modern audience. Also, back during that time you didn't have the ability to apply to go abroad for study, the government if they considered you a talent to grow would select you to go overseas. The director was born in 1979 though so he wouldn't have known personally what it was like to live back then but the attention to detail towards historical authenticity is low, to put it mildly.
