Probably because the contrails looked like dashed lines which were quite unusual. And there had been news about progress in RDEs recently.
RDE's detonations happen thousands of times a second though, I doubt you'd be able to tell just by looking at the contrails.

You are probably right. Perhaps it was mixed it up with PDE. Also found this video which allegedly captured a "Chinese hyper sonic aircraft" powered by a PDE in 2023:
