This China Central TV reveals a few things:

1 FWS10 has been redesigned, shrinked in the outer dimensions as FWS10A to be used in SU27/J11.

2 The biggest technical challenge was choke stalling in 2004, has been redesigned and passes the design certification in 2005.

3 Some J10s have been fitted with FWS10A.

As far as I know, there is one J-10 equipped with the Taihang engine, her maiden flight took place in 2007.
a little correction:surge stall might be better than "choke stalling" :p

Looks like my speculation is correct. The WS-10A is a upgraded and improved version of WS-10 that is going to be used in both the J-10A and J-11s.

Let me understand this, so the WS-10 is in mass production for the J-11 series
BUT
the WS-10a is a redesigned version that is going to be used in BOTH the J-11/J-10 aircraft? That doesn't make much sense. I thought the WS-10a had a redesigned gearbox for use ONLY on the J-10

Is there such a thing as the WS-10H for the J-15? If so, which engine is it based on...the WS-10 or WS-10a?

Honestly I'm confused too, as I thought WS10 is the designation for the prototype as in J10's case, and it's the mass-production version (no doubt with adjustments to fit J10/11) gets the WS10A designation from the manufacturer & FWS10 from the state.

Anyone?

Unless there's an error, the translations given by Sydneylaide seem to indicate that both the aircraft types use the same designation FWS-10A for their engines.

My premise was that adding the suffix "A" should indicate a more substantial change than just a change in the gearbox position, something that's external to the engine core design. Anyway, I think it's a matter of designation only. There's no reason why both the aircrafts shouldn't be using the redesigned and improved version.

Agreed ... but simply regarding the position of the gearbox and that both are not interchangeable would justify a different designation for the J-11B- and the J-10-version !

Besides ... does anyone knows what the "F" tsnads for in FWS-10 ???

FWS-10 is an official designation.
10A is designed to power J-10.

Actually the original version of FWS-10 is 10A(130kN thrust class, featuring its gearbox and most accessories mounted beneath),designed to power J-10.
in 1987,the "No.10 engine project" was offcially launched ,it included 10A and some derivatives.
