Lets not forget that 2/3rds of American exports are in manufacturing, many in areas that China is starting to aspire to and to date is the first place of choice for foreign talent

Is it 2/3 export in manufacturing? I thought a lot of the export is agricultural. Then, I bet China has even higher portion of export in manufacturing, but none of these matters because they are not related to this thread.

I thought it was high , but then I heard it repeated several times with interviews on the American economy.

No it doesn't really have anything to do with the thread directly, but I was only answering several posters suggestions in the possible demise of American engineers.

While we are talking here GM the icon of American supremacy in manufacturing went belly up. Never say never who would though 20 years ago that GM can fail

I still remember when Japanese car first show up Everybody laugh until they drop .They say who would buy a sardine can ? See this is how you do it built big car that ride like ship ALOT of Chrome and plush velvety seat.

To which the Japanese reply well we only sell car for starving student

Until the gasoline shortage hit the world and suddenly those thrifty japanese car make sense and people notice that they have less problem with their car, The rest is history!

You are quite correct in 'NEVER SAY NEVER' However in GM's case Chapter 11 gives it the opportunity of divesting itself from past agreements its had with the unions, and it could also follow the path of many iconic American Companies and bounce back stronger than ever after Chapter 11.
Anyway this is too far off topic to discuss in this thread, so perhaps someone may be interested in starting a dedicated GM thread.:)

I been hearing for year that China is developing variable cycle jet engine ,the project known as CJ-2000 .it uses AL-41 core engine.
variable cycle engine is form hybrid jet engine, allow the aircraft to cruise like TF engine, and speed of a jet engine. it increase thrust, without increasing the size and volume of engine.example hybrid engine like EJ-2000,F-119,F-120 and AL-41.
the first operational hybrid jet engine was roll royce olympus for concord SST.

And how on earth should China get hand on the AL-41 core ???

I think that's completely BS.

Deino

Maybe the article might refer to AL-41F1A, which shares the same core as the AL-31, which China would've had in its possession for many years by now.

there's a report back during mid-90's as part of the deal to purchase AL-31F,the russian allowed the PLAAF to purchased single sample of AL-41 core technology for technical evuation.
Chinese technical magaine based in Xian mention of CJ-2000.
and if you been following the news, report few months ago, PLAN official mention the need supercruise capability for naval fighter.and since both JH-7,J-11 and J-10 do no possess supercruise,it's is possible the official is refering either next gen. of fighter or strong possibility, retrofitting J-11 and J-10 with home made hybrid engine.
wondering if this mean converting the WS-10 into a hybrid,in 1975,Boeing actually convert TF engine into a hybrid engine.
