Chinese Economics Thread

interesting, i heard that China has this plan to attract a couple of thousand of highly qualified talents abroad by offering one million RMB per year on top of what their salary might be.

Hmmm, very interesting. Based on what I know, most of the people who have gone back work in the Industry. I think most of the people in academia still hesitate about going back to China permenantly. Many China-born professors here in the states only go back during the Summer to get some extra cash. I have little clue why that is. It might be that the Chinese academia is too politics-heavy and most professors are tired of playing politics (although we too have to deal with politics in the US). Just my guess.

Sadly, Chinese academia has trouble with politics, pettiness, plagiarism, fabrication, and dominance by personal connections. It is a slow process to bring up the standards, but if more western-trained Chinese academics would return, it would help immensely. However, they have their own careers in mind and it is not reasonable to make people act against their personal interests. (As opposed to industry, where the market in China makes moving back a smart move in some instances).

no i dont think it'll help to bring those ppl in from abroad. first of all its not practical, second of all a lot of them got all their education in the west since they were young and lacks the necessary understanding of how things really work in China. through all these years of studying Chinese history and politics i have learned one thing that is western solutions can never resolve Chinese problems. in the end you still rely on China's own experts to do it.

the scientific areas on the other hand is a lot more open. but again China produces ton of experts of its own, what they really need is to produce entrepreneurs like bill gates. ppl who really understands China often dont give a rats a** if Chinese scientists win a nobel prize or not.:eek:ff:eek:ff:eek:ff

Yes, China needs more visionary entrepreneurs, like people who founded Suntech, BYD and Huawei.

Suntech---arguably now the world's largest solar cell manufacturer and a leading proponent of solar technology.

BYD---now the world's biggest manufacturer of Lithium Ion batteries and a world leader in the technology of such. The first in the world to commercialize a Lithium Ion battery powered automobile.

If you look at the web page of this company, its hard to tell if its really a Chinese company until you get to the contact information.

Yet these guys are in a partnership to provide technological assistance in building Israel's largest solar power plant.

Sadly visionary entrepreuneurs don't live long here, either prosecuted or die from too much alcohol or tobacco. Its a curse if your name appear on the top of the china richest man ranking. you become the target of investigations and law suits (Gome's founder for example). staying low and modest is probably safer for those business man. Its hard to do business here without geting involved in shady deals, but geting better now.

I believe there will be more visionaries in the next few years judging from the quality of some young people from the business circle. The are very entrepreneurial and educated.

wrong, there are plenty of competent entrepreneurs in China, and shady deals is never a problem for the insiders. if there is one thing that this country never lacks its talent, simply because it has so many ppl. the problem is that China's government is too deeply involved in the market, and there are various factors that does not allow it to replicate either Japan or america's model. so just having really good bunsinessmen wont do the job, neither is replicating other country's system. the last thing you wanna do when studying China is to label its problems as something that are already solved by other countries. China needs to develop new ways of doing things.

I never said that there is lack of talents here and never said that china should copy US or Japan....especially not japan (that culture kills entreupreneurial spirit). Having a good entrepreunor really helps the economy. of cource govt. backing will help.

I agree that china needs to develop its own unique way to do business, but i still believe that shady deals hurts the country and citizens more than it helps. For example, many employees here would accept kickbacks from less competent suppliers. This will result in a poor performance by both parties and hurt the industry while the agent that accept the kickback will gain shorterm benefit. Kickbacks is the norm here and its the least shady of all the shady deals.

Except unless you are a national power company, I won't regard any of the readers here as end consumers for Suntech products.

What you need is better enforcement of laws and against corruption.
