Covid lockdowns made births plummet far more in China than in most other countries. They saved boomers and got a massively smaller amount of newborns instead. Was it worth it? Even now the 'zero covid' strategy has run its course. Omicron is too easily transmissible to be contained.

All this has significant consequences for future - and current - growth.
Soon it will be contained just like any other variants, and unlike the United States we refuse to let even a tiny fraction of our population die from that virus, that's the wish of the majority of the Chinese population.

It's rehearsal for the coming total biological war. They are almost at the point where they can contain it. Next will come the virus with 80% kill rate all over the world, except China.

That will never happen as long as games, movie and TV scripts are sent to 60 year old bureacrats in Beijing for approval.
This. I wonder why they couldn't do some sort of compromise to let domestic creators to create an overseas version to cater the global audience. Maybe they could make it easier to setup entertainment shell companies in HK to bypass the need for regulation approval in the Mainland. I understand why they are curtailing fandom behaviors and decadent in their own local population, but it doesn't have to stunt the development of their own entertainment industry to export to the world.

Yup, those are successful examples, and recent ones as well. I wonder why there isn't much development for overseas consumption before, could be that domestic entertainment businesses used to focus only on the Chinese market. There's still the issue of censorship, which those "oppressed" gamers in reddit kept on complaining and adaptation to the culture overseas that needs to be solved, but I think we are seeing a trend of domestic entertainment business reaching out to the global audience.

Even Genshin Impact had to censor some of their in-game character outfits recently.
The game was already PG friendly so the censorship just comes off as being unnecessary and counterproductive.

IMO the TV/film regulators are incompetent at the job and don't know what they're doing. Instead of resorting to censorship, they should focus on promoting/funding media projects that can showcase Chinese culture and do away with the excessive regulations..

They really shouldn't, in fact that's the major reason why their stuff sucks so much...
What the TV/film regulators are doing now is being directly involved in the media projects themselves by approving the script and censoring what they don't like. That's the wrong strategy.

What they should be doing is this:

Make investments in the projects but do NOT get involved directly. Let the creators and writers work.
Also, have CCTV and CGTN promote quality cultural products like Genshin Impact, etc..

The best way to develop the entertainment industry is via a bottom up approach. People working in the industry know what viewers and consumers want to watch. A govt led top-down approach is unlikely to succeed..

The CPC has done a superb job with economic development but their media regulatory department has been a complete disaster.
