The 2023 China Brand Day events kicked off in Shanghai on Wednesday as the country seeks to develop its brand building, according to a Xinhua report.

The events, which will run until May 14, comprise an international forum and an exposition on China's brand development.

The exposition is being held both online and offline. The offline segment covers an area of nearly 60,000 square meters.

This year's events also comprise a special exhibition zone, showing China's achievements empowered by brand building in terms of modern agriculture, quality services and digital economy, among others.

Gulang county is a famous production base of natural green food and agricultural products with superior geographical and climatic conditions and sufficient illumination. In recent years, the local government has committed itself to building smart agriculture and introducing a number of enterprises with high-technology content to promote economic development and increase the income of local migrants.

The making of Xiashi colored lanterns requires meticulous attention to detail. It involves eight skills and stitch patterns. They are mainly made of rice paper, sawali and lead wire, and they incorporate the eight traditional skills of drawing, bending, carving, fastening, embroidering, mounting, pasting and tying into an organic whole.

The making of the lanterns is an ancient folk art in Haining that can be traced back 1,200 years. It was popular early in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Later, in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Xiashi colored lanterns were presented as tributes to the court.

During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), people took various lanterns in hand or carried them on their shoulders and went to the streets, singing and dancing to the deafening sound of gongs and drums. The contingents were often several kilometers long. Such grand lantern festivals gradually became a folk custom in Haining.

Chen Yongmei invented an environmentally friendly dyeing method involving the recycling of waste products of vine tea.

"We extract plant pigment from old leaves of vine tea and dye cotton, hemp, silk and wool. It is finally used for clothes and home textiles," she said.

Born into a family whose livelihood depended on plant dyeing, Chen developed special feelings for the process as a child. By chance, she found that old vine leaves from her hometown made a good dye, and she opened her own business in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, in 2020.

A clothing design major in college, she now combines fashion elements into her products.

Her company has a new plant dyeing garden for raw materials, and it plans to build an education base for whoever interested in the process to try it.
