A winter swimming enthusiast gets into an icy swimming pool in Heihe, China, where the air temperature has dropped to about -20 degrees. There are indications that winter swimmers get sick less often than the general population. Short term exposure of the whole body to cold water produces oxidative stress, which makes winter swimmers develop improved antioxidative protection.

OMG, what's up with this new fad? My mother-in-law's friend also has a dog like that. Come on people, if you want to see animals do tricks, go to the circus! Don't get a dog just to have it do tricks to impress your friends!

Picture: Imaginechina/REX

Uhhh... Oxidative stress is BAD and is one of the main causes of cancer. "Exposing a person to oxidative stress to improve anti-oxidative protection" is a bad idea! All the growth factors and pro-inflammatory mediators secreted in your body when exposed to oxidative stress will stimulate cell proliferation and tumor development. Not only that, white blood cells are particularly fond of these growth factors and pro-inflammatory mediators and will be attracted to the site of secretion. These white blood cells, especially macrophages and neutrophils, are highly toxic and damaging to normal tissues since they eat anything and everything in their path. That's why these winter swimmers tend to get arthritis later on. So don't do it.
