The spectacular ice sculptures at the 16th Harbin Ice and Snow World festival have been illuminated for the first time during a preview in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China. The annual Harbin Ice and Snow World will be officially opened on January 5, 2015.

The National Stadium, dubbed "Bird's Nest", is illuminated in preparation for the New Year's Eve, Dec 27, 2014. The New Year countdown of 2015 in Beijing will be held at the Olympic Park along with two other venues, Yanqing district in the capital and Chongli county of Zhangjiakou city, Hebei province. As this year's celebrations will be aimed at promoting China's bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, the events will focus on conveying the spirit of winter sports.
