A fisherman uses a cormorant to catch fish in the Li River in Guilin, China. Cormorant fishing has been used in China and Japan since around 960 AD. In order to catch the fish, fishermen must first control the birds, which is done by tying a snare near the cormorants throats. This method allows the birds to swallow smaller fish - as a treat - but any large fish remain in their throat.
