I find this news funny but kind of sad.

Fake Samsung HDD appears, Chinese scammers found the trick to build an infinite hard drive

Fake Samsung HDD appears, Chinese scammers found the trick to build an infinite hard drive
By Robin Eyckmans on April 10, 2011

Chinese scammers have found a way to add storage on a hard drive to make it look that it has more storage space than in reality. When copying a large file to disk it gives no error message, but it writes the memory over again and again.

The scam is presented by a Russian developer, who heard the case of from a friend which works near to the Chinese border in a repair center. When the fake Samsung HDD was opened, it appeared that it didn’t had a 500GB HDD inside, but a 128MB flash drive. To make the device feel heavier, two bolts were used. The memory is stuck in a loop mode, which means that it keeps writing it self over. This made that only the last 128MB of a file were kept on the flash drive. Because the memory controler makes the computer think it has a larger storage space, many consumers will not quickly realize they are scammed. It is still unclear how the Chinese have achieved this scam.

Sigh, I wonder how long the culprit has been doing this. I think if china was to get better law and enforcement. I bet many people in the forum that work for defence company will go to china to seek jobs :)

Police: arrest in case of dead Chinese student

By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 2:37 p.m.

TORONTO — Investigators arrested a 29-year-old man Wednesday in the death of a student from Beijing, who was last seen alive on a webcam by her boyfriend in China as she struggled with an attacker, police said.

Brian Dickson has been charged with first-degree murder, Toronto police spokesman Tony Vella told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Dickson is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

Police said the body of York University student Liu Qian, 23, was found Friday in her apartment in Toronto a few hours after her boyfriend in China witnessed the attack. She was naked from the waist down and there were no obvious signs of sexual assault or trauma that would have led to her death.

Liu was chatting with her boyfriend, Meng Xianchao, by webcam at about 1 a.m. Friday when a man knocked on the door, police said.

Meng reported seeing a struggle break out between the two before Liu's webcam was shut off. The friend contacted other friends in Toronto who in turn called police.

The victim's father, Liu Jianhui, said his daughter studied at Beijing City University before moving to Canada, where she met her classmate and boyfriend Meng Xianchao.

^^ I agree ToxSic. I'm surprised that no one but you has commented on this tragic crime considering how many members we have in Canada.

While it is sad usually if students just focus on their study and be more careful and selective about their aquaintances and friends this kind of thing shouldn't happen. Then there are always a few crazy nut.

I don't think it's a good idea to let teens study abroad by themselves, even though sometimes there is no other option. I'm glad I moved to NZ with my whole family.
