Fake Samsung HDD appears, Chinese scammers found the trick to build an infinite hard drive
Fake Samsung HDD appears, Chinese scammers found the trick to build an infinite hard drive
By Robin Eyckmans on April 10, 2011
Chinese scammers have found a way to add storage on a hard drive to make it look that it has more storage space than in reality. When copying a large file to disk it gives no error message, but it writes the memory over again and again.
The scam is presented by a Russian developer, who heard the case of from a friend which works near to the Chinese border in a repair center. When the fake Samsung HDD was opened, it appeared that it didn’t had a 500GB HDD inside, but a 128MB flash drive. To make the device feel heavier, two bolts were used. The memory is stuck in a loop mode, which means that it keeps writing it self over. This made that only the last 128MB of a file were kept on the flash drive. Because the memory controler makes the computer think it has a larger storage space, many consumers will not quickly realize they are scammed. It is still unclear how the Chinese have achieved this scam.
