It is possible to build skyscrapers without using concrete.

Sure can, lots of buildings are, the Empire State building in New York for example is one of them with a steel frame structure and brick facade. Even today's most skyscrapers are build with steel frame and the walls are strong glass panels (although it gives poor R-value as insulation).

Re: Chinese Daily Photos, Videos & News of 2013!!!

I didnt knew that they had already started construction.

However, besides safety, what bothers me most is that how this building is going to be profitable, seeing that there is already a real estate bubble in china. This tower is getting built in what seems an undeveloped area of a city that isnt even that economically important. Had this been in beijing or shanghai, it would make more sense.

Lets face it. This is a project to claim the "tallest building in the world" title.

while the market demand for this project is questionable, the modular nature of the building means that it can be easily scaled down if there's too much vacancy once it's completed.

also it's incorrect to say that changsha is not "economically important." changsha has been a rail transport hub for decades, is situated on one of the yangtze's major tributaries, and has seen some of the fastest growth in china in the last 10 years.

manufacturing in china has been moving inland, and major factories have popped up all around. changsha, along with wuhan and chongqing, is one of the major engines of growth for china's central region where developement had been comparatively lagging compared to the coast.

lol maybe it's because of my own personal bias (i'm from changsha) but regardless of whether there's demand for this building i can't have you dump on my hometown without saying something about it!

hmm. Perhabs we might measure things this way: How many skyscrappers does changsha have right now and how high are they? are they occupied or empty?

If by scaled down you mean they will take apart and take away some floors of the building AFTER completion...... I don't think that's economically feasible even for a prefab building, the cost is just too high compared to the reuse value of the materials removed. Besides, they'll be highly motivated to keep its designed height as there's a great difference between being No.1 and No.2 on the list of world's tallest buildings.

I do agree with you that Changsha is far from being economically insignificant. It is already ranked the 18th in GDP among all Chinese cities, and among the top 20 Chinese cities it has one of the fastest economic growth rate (13%). I believe Changsha has more growth potential than some of the cities ranked higher than it right now, so in a couple decades it is entirely possible that Changsha may become one of the top 10 in China.

To put it on a scale, Changsha's GDP in 2012 is roughly on par (especially if PPP adjusted) with Berlin, Germany. This is near 40% of what HK is making. HK's yearly growth rate is around 1.4%, and Changsha is at 13%. Changsha's GDP per capita is already higher than both Beijing and Shanghai. Foreigners will certainly hear more about this city in the future, if they haven't heard about it now.

As advertised, the building will be completed in April next year!, does it mean April 2014 ?

I am a professional engineer, extremely hard for me to believe that ... imagine 220 floor in just 9 months or 1.2 floors completed a day ??????????

More likely to complete it in 2016 or 2017

I think there is a video before of a prefab company in china building a 15 story building on average one floor per day. (foundation not counted). I think it may be the same company.

edit: actually it is 30 buildings in 15 days

But I think you can't expect too much styles with those modular designs. They will look blocky and basically be bigger or smaller versions of each other. But might be good for providing inexpensive housing for the masses as part of the urbanisation drive. I think it would be useful for building large apartment complexes, these buildings all looks the same anyway. Urbanisation is about economy of scale - the closer/denser you can pack people together, the less cost per capita to provide services - which means people can enjoy services that they otherwise might find more difficult or cannot afford rurally.

And given the growing aging population in China it may be wise to think about providing inexpensive housings to them when they are old, if they don't already have houses or are the poorer bunch.

The schedule has been pushed back to 210 days, still incredible. The Empire State Building took just under 15 months.

It's doable, imagine you don't have all the clutter of other machinery and construction vehicles maneuvering around the construction site, plus you don't have to wait for the concrete dump trucks to get there on according to schedule in order for the pouring to start, therefore saving a lot of space and time. These modules are already manufactured and engineer to according to it's section and therefore just needs to be transported to the site and assembled together.

Now here is a funny news but definitely NOT fun for the developer and investors. I don't know how the Architects, Engineers, Code Inspectors, and Contractors missed this?

If you are thinking of investing in an apartment at the Intempo skyscraper in Benidorm, Spain, be prepared to bring some good walking shoes: Its builders forgot a working elevator, says the Spanish news site El Pais.

According to a story surfaced on Gizmodo, the luxury high-rise tower, which started construction in 2007, was originally designed for 20 floors. But the the developers decided to push the design to include 47 floors with 269 homes. When completed, it will be Benidorm’s highest building at 650 feet.

There seemed to be just one important oversight: In going up to 47 floors, designers forgot to take into account room for an elevator shaft. El Pais reports that the architects on the project resigned in May 2012.

The building “represents a long story of incompetence,” according to El Pais. The coastal town had a building boom that led to the nickname “Beniyork” for its skyline of high-rises.

But then the recession hit. Intempo’s developer, which had once advertised the building as the “banner of the future,” and the bank that provided the loan for construction both went bankrupt in 2009. The building has cost €100 million so far.

“We had heard reports on the elevator last week when we listed the building to generate advance interest,” wrote Terry Walker, a spokesperson for Walker Property Spain’s London office, in an email to Yahoo News.

“In the light of the other problems that have been overcome at Intempo, we would be confident that a solution can be found,” Walker said.

Already 35 percent of the apartments have been sold to international buyers — the site describes the abodes as "Dubai style luxury." The building is 95 percent complete, and it is expected to be done by spring 2014.

Expect, too, a built-in exercise regime.
