Re: Chinese Daily Photos, Videos & News of 2013!!!

Sorry for the confusion popeye.I was refering to the last article on your previous [email protected] the life of me I cant see what Transformers have hot to do with selling real estate.

I think I have seen photos of collasped roadways/flyovers in some of your previous postings so I am not convinced that the cracks are harmless......
Is it normal?

Those are just surface cracks meaning it doesn't penetrate deep into the core of the concrete/asphalt structure where the steel rebars are locate to caused any alarm (BUT CAN'T BE IGNORE), otherwise the engineers would've prohibit from further use. A lot of the cracks has to do with weather rain will erode road materials along with changing of temperature puts a lot of stress on the material.

Crack filling is a vital part of maintaining the life of your asphalt or concrete road. Otherwise the unmaintained cracks will allow water to penetrate the surface of the concrete/asphalt causing the gravel base and the concrete/asphalt to erode. This can cause sink holes, pot holes, and over time premature replacement of your road and not to mention very costly. Water is a very powerful and patience force, just imagine a rushing river carving out a canyon is my analogy for it. I hope this answers your question.

the fact that there are so many cracks and the cracks are relatively wide but short tells me they are surface as well. It's it's one long deep crack then time to start worrying.

Maybe they should consider using Roman concrete.

baby trafficking? I would put that up there with violent crimes such as rape and 1st degree assault. He needs a long jail time for him to think over his actions.

I'm afraid a death sentence is waiting for her after all investigation of the cases she committed over the past eight years. I say this again "This is the side affect of the one-child policy"

On the other hand, children are very troublesome. If you have been a parent, you know that. I really can't withstand them if they aren't my babies. So, I'll never adopt one, let alone "buying".

When it comes to raining season, Hanoi is no better than Phnom Penh. People should better buy amphibious vehicles.

kwaigonegin, No slight to you.. but.. Gents the doctor is a women..

Zhang, the 56-year-old doctor, is suspected of having persuaded couples to give up their babies over the past eight years.

She was exposed only recently when a couple became suspicious and reported her to the police.

Gents..we are going on a quick road trip.. I won't be back until Sunday afternoon. In the mean time get your daily dose of Chinese centric photos in the links below. Enjoy!

I noticed something as well when I took a third look on that, the cracks are at the bottom of the bridge highway not at the top, therefore rain can't be the factor. Meaning? Somebody didn't quite mix the concrete according to spec or poorly time management during the pouring of the concrete. What we see here is where compression forces and tension forces (stretching) playing itself out. Never the less, it's still just surface cracks.

Maybe they should consider using Roman concrete.

Nobody has yet figure that out. The exact mix and formula has been lost through time.

No matter how, they have started the construction. All my best wishes to them and hope they would finish it on schedule.

I didnt knew that they had already started construction.

However, besides safety, what bothers me most is that how this building is going to be profitable, seeing that there is already a real estate bubble in china. This tower is getting built in what seems an undeveloped area of a city that isnt even that economically important. Had this been in beijing or shanghai, it would make more sense.

Lets face it. This is a project to claim the "tallest building in the world" title.

The building is called Sky City for a reason. "According to the plan, the building's 220 stories will have a hotel accommodating 1000 guests, a hospital, 5 schools, and offices. Of the total space available, nearly 83% will be for residential purposes, housing up to 17,000 people. 5% will be for the hotel housing 1000, while 3% each will be dedicated to schools, hospitals, offices and shops."

So it's a mini city in the sky.

But, according to reports, construction has halted due to application not yet being approved and the Group will announce later the resumption date.

I actually highly doubt this project will ever be finished, at least without major changes. Broad Group has only built 4 prefabbed buildings before, the tallest of which was only 30 storeys, so the experience is definitely not there. A building this tall will need to have vertical and torsional stiffness to resist extremely high lateral wind loads, for example, using giant concrete filled steel columns extending through the whole height of the building (i.e. Taipei 101) or a concrete core with buttressed concrete walls protruding from the core (i.e. Burj Khalifa). In my mind it would be very difficult to achieve the needed stiffness of the structure without using concrete, as they are proposing. Even if they do, the concrete would have to be cured in stages, so in order to build 204 floors in 90 days, they would need to build on average slightly more than 2 floors per day. Concrete cure time, as a rule of thumb, is 7 days to strip forms and 28 days to achieve workable structural strength. So there is no way they can meet the 90 days schedule they are proposing.

The Shanghai Tower sure is impressive though!
It is possible to build skyscrapers without using concrete. While the concrete core design is popular, other structures such as steel framed bundled tube has been demonstrated in buildings like the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) a long time ago. I suspect that the Sky City may use a similar structural design given its geometry in the CG picture.

It is possible that the project may not finish in the time frame they advertised, it is also questionable whether the project will be profitable (not counting its advertising value for the company and the city). But I wouldn't worry too much about structural safety. Given what's at stake, it is highly unlikely they will ever start building anything without a build plan that has been extensively scrutinized and tested for its feasibility and safety.

Very interesting, I didn't realize supertall structures could be built completely without structural concrete. It does look like the Sky City would be using a similar structural design to the bundled tube. The Sky City is 300+ metres taller though, so I'd be a bit concerned with lateral stiffness. Although the Willis Tower was built using prefab as well, so guess we'll wait and see. I do agree that this project is definitely doable if they had the will to complete it. But given them being completely devoid of experience in building supertalls, there will be delays, over budget, design changes, and all that is associated with an inexperienced EPCM contractor.
