In Binchaun County, China, a snake-like earthworm measuring over 19 inches (a half-meter) long was found in a house gutter. Li Zhiwei, a Forestry Bureau worker, made the discovery and eventually decided to keep the worm and raise it in his backyard. An adult earthworm's measurements vary by species and can range anywhere from 10mm long and 1mm wide, to 3-meters long and over 25mm wide. Environmental factors also influence an earthworm's body size, and they tend to grow longer and larger during humid seasons if they take in sufficient nutrition and have no natural enemies. Biologists plan to study the earthworm found by Li to classify it and identify the reason it was able to grow to its current length.

@Post #898:

With 6 million bachelor degrees awarded every year, it's amazing to realize the difficulties that some parts of society have in gaining access to even the most rudimentary standards of education.

With that kind of design there's no way you can get by the department of engineering code enforcement. The architects and designers most definitely has to go through several construction plans of rejections and modifications before finally getting the stamp of approval.

A Chinese man was arrested for attempted theft after swallowing a diamond worth nearly US$14,000 at a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka on Wednesday. AFP photo

A Chinese man was arrested for attempted theft after swallowing a diamond worth nearly US$14,000 at a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka on Wednesday. He will have to undergo surgery to remove the stone, police said.

The 32-year-old had asked the stall owner for a close inspection of the 1.5-carat diamond on the opening day of Facets Sri Lanka, an annual jewellery show in the capital Colombo.

"He came with another Chinese man. One of them tried to distract me while the other had a diamond in his hand," Suresh de Silva, director of the Belgrade International gem store, told AFP.

"When I realised what was happening and shouted, one ran away and we managed to catch the man who swallowed the stone."

The man was taken to the Colombo National Hospital where he was to be administered laxatives, but police said X-rays showed the diamond was lodged in his gullet and was not going down.

"Doctors have advised surgery to remove the diamond," police spokesman Ajith Rohana told AFP.
