Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is expected to become the largest aircraft maintenance base worldwide after the completion of ST Aerospace (Guangzhou) Aviation Services Co. Ltd. (STAG)'s hangar projects, the reporter learnt from Guangdong Airport Management Corp. (GAMC) on Aug. 4.
15 Hangars to Be Built in the Future
According to an official from GAMC, 6 MRO hangars will be constructed successively in the next ten years by STAG, while space for five more hangars will be reserved for future development. By then, STAG and China Southern Airlines will own about 15 MRO hangars at CAN, making the airport probably the largest aircraft maintenance base worldwide.
CAN to Become an International Transit Hub
Following the completion of the expansion project of CAN, plus the gradually optimizing infrastructure and transfer procedures, more airlines will be drawn to the airport in the future, especially foreign airlines. By 2015, the number of foreign airlines operating flights at CAN is expected to reach 60.
After the completion of the expansion project of CAN, establishing intercontinental transfer systems centered at Guangzhou will become one of the significant measures to develop CAN into a world-class international transit hub, added the official.
Through joint efforts with airlines like China Southern, three major intercontinental transfer systems are coming into being around CAN - the Europe/North America-Guangzhou-Oceania network, the Southeast Asia-Guangzhou-Northeast Asia/ North America/Europe network, and the Northeast Asia-Guangzhou-Southeast Asia/South Asia/Oceania/Middle East/Africa network.
"Aerotropolis" Coming into Being
In the future, an "aerotropolis" integrated with office areas, business hotels, freight facilities and factories will be built at CAN and its surrounding areas. "With the carrying out of the expansion project, favorable resources are rapidly gathering around CAN, including many aviation related industries such as aircraft maintenance and aviation electronics. Hopefully, with increasing number of business enterprises gathering around the airport and its neighboring traffic areas, a new 'aerotropolis' centered around CAN will come into being," said the official.
