An interesting looking wind tunnel model. The OP alleges that this is a standard wind tunnel model, not an active project.

Workers of HNA Technic remove the original paint on an inbound airplane at the one-stop aircraft maintenance base of Hainan Free Trade Port in Haikou, south China's Hainan Province, Oct. 21, 2024. Inbound airplanes in Hainan are eligible for preferential treatments of the free trade port including exemption of cash deposite as well as duty-free fuel and maintenance supplies. The comprehensive bonded zone of Haikou Airport reaped more than 20 billion yuan (about 2.81 billion U.S. dollars) worth of bonded maintenance services for these airplanes in the first three quarters of 2024. Pretty good overview (spoiler: it's optimistic).

Ew, Noah Smith

The article itself is not terrible, but citing that guy opening is not a great starter.

Also not sure about the direct to direct comparisons between C919 and competitors (that's been a point of some debate in the past rather than taking it at face value)

The concluding paragraphs are also a bit simplistic. Direct comparisons of modern commercial airliners with space launch is not useful, and direct comparisons of Chinese efforts in the commercial airliner space with other industries also leaves our the major differences (latent industrial strengths and weaknesses, over focus on IP/espionage) and useless aspects (national pride???).

Alright, I kind of did a short piece here on the entire China's aerospace sector improvements. Not much need to be said. Shaanxi is fighting for 2nd C919 production line as well as aero engine production line. Things are moving along smoothly. Don't need to get agitated just because a couple of people are coping online.

T700/800 production ramp up alone has been quite the sight to see.

It takes a decade to develop new materials. A decade to develop a new jet engine from scratch. A decade to develop a new aircraft.
You cannot make an aircraft without the prior steps unless you buy your way out of it with imports. It just takes time it is as simple as that.

China could have tried getting out of this by buying the technology from Ukraine post Soviet collapse. But those deals never went anywhere unlike for the marine gas turbines. For example China was supposed to build the An-225 and D-18T engine in China. But it never happened.
