Also is China aiming to push an indigenous general/utility/light/ultralight etc aviation industry soon? PT6/TPE331/ATP equivalents? What's out there other than the Y-12? Are there non trainer variants of the AG100 in the works?

A Chinese company, Wanfeng Aviation, owns Diamond Aircraft. Austro Engine is a subsidiary of Diamond Aircraft and they make engines.

I'm more interested in original Chinese product, something designed from the ground up by a Chinese startup or at least produced entirely inside of China.
Wanfeng Aviation produced DA50 aircraft entirely inside one city ''Qingdao''.. though they owned Diamond aircraft as well as Austro engine..

AG100 Built by the Zhejiang China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Institute, a subsidiary of AVIC General Aircraft, the AG100 is a lightweight basic training plane for civilian flight students..

"Compared with its competitors in the international market, the AG100 has several advantages: its light weight thanks to the use of composite materials a unique wing design, and a high-performance engine promise lower operational costs. It has a monitor that can be used by the back seat student that allows him or her to learn avionics and communications,". "It also has a special parachute that will be activated in case of emergencies, and that will ensure the safety of the crew."

according to institute, as per estimates about 100 light-duty training planes will be needed each year in the Chinese market.

We plan to expand the annual manufacturing capacity at the Deqing factory to 20 before the end of this year, and will strive to increase the number to at least 30 before the end of 2025," and we also working on different variants of AG100.. the manager said.

Yeah recall seeing this, but dubious about its progeny. The first flights of the ARJ21 and C919 were major events, and given the high priority accorded MA700 in the 2010s - before the Pratt engine deal fell through - one would have thought they'd have made a lot more noise about the first flight. Also, to my knowledge, nothing has been seen since.

It's all very strange. I mean, they have like 285 orders for this thing, and one would think there would be a lot of news about progress, both to reassure existing customers and entice new ones. The secrecy around military platforms is understandable, but around a turboprop airliner? Also, contrast the secrecy/lack of news around MA700 with the regular updates that we get about AG600.

MA700 as originally proposed looked like a great fit for China, and the world definitely needs an ATR competitor. But what gives here?

Engines. Canada refuse to sell PW150C stalled the program.

The reported maiden flight in 2021 was probably done by a prototype aircraft equiped with PW150C engine

It is reported that the MA700 has completed its first flight in 23 or 24 September 2021. Despite this, the lack of prospects for a regular supply of engine would put the MA700 project on hold, yet Chinese developed engines AEP500 series have been unveiled as early as 2018, and a small-scale trial production has been completed around 2021, although the target of airworthiness certification of the AEP500 powerplant is planned at year 2028.

At the 2023 Paris air show, the MA700 turboprop was missing in the AVIC stand of the show, at which preceding model MA60 turboprop was there instead, thus one commented that “whose (in-development MA700’s) fate would be unknown” following Ottawa’s refusal to grant export license for PW150C engine so the absence of the model (MA700, in year 2023 show) raises questions about the programme of developing MA700.

The Russians do not have any engine in that power category either. It is one of the reasons why the Il-112V project failed. They are supposed to use a variant of the TV7-117S engine in the TVRS-44 and Il-114 but it remains to be seen how this disaster of an engine will do.
