I believe the intent is to compete with US engine manufacturers so I think they would like to have their own engine. The key is that the engines develop high performance in conjunction with fuel efficiency/fuel savings.

From what I have read the Chinese civilian airliner engine program seems to be a mess. Enough that the Chinese government, unlike usual, has two competing engine designs last I heard. Hopefully at least one of them will be successful. Not that other countries don't have their problems either. So what might happen is the engine will happen later or have worse fuel consumption/reliability or both.

Where did you hear that rumor mongering forum? As far as I know there are always 2 contending prototype for civilian airline engine . Pratt and Whitney spend nearly 3 decades to develop engine and still they have problem . So it is not unusual No need to condescend
Anyway Here is the production rate for ARJ 21 via JSCh

Urumqi airlines to get its 1st unit in the next few weeks

so we should see 3 operators within a month or so with 14 units flying
