Proposed AHL specs are very similar to CH-53K, and therefore similar relationship to Mi-26: similar power output, but lower empty weight, payload capacity, and MTOW. Presumably such lighter structure trades top-end lift capacity for more economical performance in most scenarios.

Have the russians mentioned if they will also acquire this helicopter, or is this just for china? Will there be any cooperation in the engine sector? someone mentioned that the russians will offer cooperation in the engine for the sino-russian plane. Will they do the same for the AHL ?

I honestly don't see the first question as really a question. AHL is slightly heavier than Super Stallion, but far lighter than Mi-26. China surely want this class, therefor the program. Russia does not have this class herself and surely will not get Super Stallion. So the real question is whether Russia has a need for this class. If the answer is yes, then Russia will and can only by AHL. My guess is Russia need it, but maybe not as many as China. The reason is this class is good for heavy transport, but less challenging to build compared to Mi-26. It is something that any big country need for civilian or military, same reason as Super Stallion for US.

The engine is something less clear for me. Russia may not want to develop an engine jointly unless China can provide a better alternative (better components, lower costs etc.) Cooperation is always about what one can offer.

Russia is currently developing new PD-12V turboshaft, based on PD-14 core, for application on Mi-26 and AHL:

The engine is designated PD-12V and can develop 14,500 shp. However, it will be flat-rated to 11,500 shp to match the Mi-26’s existing gearbox. This power can be maintained to the altitude of 2,000 meters or at ambient temperature of +40 degree Celsius at sea level, thus improving the helicopter’s hot-and-high performance. According to Aviadvigatel, the PD-12 is 100 kg heavier than the D-136, but burns 18 percent less fuel. The developer says that a full-scale mockup has already been made so that designers can do a test-fit on Mi-26 airframe. The PD-12 is also offered on the Sino-Russian Advanced Heavy Lift (AHL) rotorcraft now in development.

Given Russia's experience in this area and the relatively limited number of airframes/engines that will be produced, it may be sensible just to use Russian engines rather than to set up independent programs or complicated manufacturing arrangements. China can make up workshare elsewhere.

I think it would be quite sensible for Russia to acquire this aircraft itself and it would probably have better export prospects than current Mi-26 too. I would like to see a real "joint" China-Russia project and AHL is one of the more promising candidates for such, but production arrangements will still be tricky. We will see.

Having lighter structure than Mi-26 and therefore better power to weight ratio will also help to improve performance at high altitude.

It would be more sensible to china to get russia to jointly develop an engine in order to get more expertise in developing engines, but russia wont get as much from this project as the sino-russian plane, so little incentive for russia to share engine secrets with china, IMO.

Engine is like the only field Russia would still have the edge over China. If we ever hear a joint-developement then we can assume it's the end for Russia.

Guys ... can we stay on topic !!!???

Yes we all know the US is leading ... the Russians are suppa ... but this topic is no comparative thread for mine-versus-Yours but a news-thread !!

End of these off-topic posts or I will clean this thread. Russian economy is completely irrelevant.

Orders for China's C919 jumbo passenger jet reach 600
With a standard range of 4,075 kilometers, the China-made jet is comparable to updated Airbus 320
Orders for China's first homegrown large passenger jet, the C919, reached 600 aircraft on Tuesday as a new customer signed to book 30 of the jets.

The China Everbright Financial Leasing Co. Ltd. on Tuesday placed the order with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the Shanghai-based manufacturer of the C919.

Zhang Jinliang, president of China Everbright Bank, which has a 90-percent stake in Everbright Financial Leasing, said the bank will continue cooperation with COMAC in research and development as well as marketing.

So far, a total of 24 foreign and domestic customers, including China's national carrier Air China, have placed orders for the aircraft.

C919 completed its maiden test flight in May, making China the fourth jumbo jet producer after the United States, Western Europe and Russia.

With a standard range of 4,075 kilometers, the China-made jet is comparable to updated Airbus 320 and Boeing's new generation 737 planes, signaling the country's entry into the global aviation market.

China certifies COMAC to mass produce ARJ-21 regional jets -Xinhua (BA)

BEIJING, July 9 (Reuters) - Commercial Aircraft Corp of China Ltd (COMAC) has received approval to begin mass production of its ARJ-21 jet, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on its social media account on Sunday.

The state-owned plane maker received a production certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the news agency said.

Shanghai-based COMAC last year said that orders for the twin-engine jet had reached 413 from 19 customers.

COMAC is also developing a bigger C919 jet as part of its efforts to compete against Boeing and Airbus in the lucrative narrow-body market. The C919 had 24 customers and 600 orders, COMAC said in June. (Reporting By Matthew Miller and Fang Cheng; Editing by Himani Sarkar)
