China's aviation industries have made lots of improvements, and unlike the past, I'm sure they could copy the Mig-23 today if they wish.I’ve always liked the Mig-23 and it’s landing gear design. This Chinese version is beyond cool. However I would like to see it in a fixed wing design and not as variable geometry.
Any thoughts on its present day viability?
Chinese Air Force's Q-6 aka Chinese Mig-23.
In late 1970s the PLAAF was looking for the replacement of Nanchang Q-5 "Fantan" aircraft and the designers came up with a designed which resembled the soviet made Mig-23.The Chinese engineers bought a handful of Mig-23s from Egypt to evaluate the variable geometric wing technology however the continuous costs escalation and due to the complexity of variable geometric wing technology the Chinese had to abandon the project.
Another reason I imagine was that the combination of fixed wings with large LEX and other vortex generators together with an increase of the Thrust/Weight ratio promised to provide a cheaper and lighter solution that would be less maintenance intensive.I’ve always liked the Mig-23 and it’s landing gear design. Thanks amigo!Another reason I imagine was that the combination of fixed wings with large LEX and other vortex generators together with an increase of the Thrust/Weight ratio promised to provide a cheaper and lighter solution that would be less maintenance intensive.
But the main reason was of course the economic policy of Deng.
