Chinese Aviation Industry

OK, sure it's good news for COMAC, but I'd be a lot more excited if it wins international orders, and eventually even orders from the developed world. Nevertheless, it's a good beginning and important milestone for Sino aviation.

The 60 ordered by China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC) and aviation investment company Friedmann Pacific Asset Management are for lease and for operation in Indonesia for a yet-to-be announced Indonesian Airline.

Then let's not get too excited until the unnamed Indonesian airlines are named.

It's not an Indonesian Airline that purchased the planes. I think it was a Chinese owned company (stationed in Indonesia) that purchased them.
OK, so it's Chinese purchase for Chinese airline operating in Indonesia? Well, at least the ARJ21 had to be certified to operate out of Indonesia, so that's progress.

Well Indonesia has a lot of experience with Chinese plane. One of the airlines Merpati order dozen of M 60 But suffer couple of crashes Not sure if it due to pilot error But M 60 has bad reputation and Australia doesn't give license for M 60 to operate. Hope COMAC do better this time around.
Actually Indonesia the perfect geography for ARJ21 It is Island nation where the major cities lie within 1000-1500 radius

A lot of politician capitalize on this accident and goes off tangent by blaming Mary Pengerstu the first Indonesian Chinese trade minister who negotiate the purchase.
Post script Merpati went bankrupt. So Comac should be selective as to who should be the operator of ARJ 21

Lawmakers Want Merpati’s Wings Clipped as Investigators Take Black Box

The crash-landing yesterday of a Merpati Nusantara MA60 aircraft has prompted a lawmaker to call for all similar planes to be grounded, as the airline told this newspaper that investigators had taken the plane’s flight data recorder.

“Merpati is too bad to be saved,” National Mandate Party (PAN) lawmaker Teguh Juwarno said on Tuesday. “The Transportation Ministry should ground all similar planes.”

Teguh, a member of the House of Representatives’ Commission V on transportation, said all routes operated by the state-owned carrier should be assumed by other airlines.

A Merpati Xian MA60 carrying 50 passengers was forced to make a crash-landing at El Tari airport, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara on Monday.

Five people were seriously injured in the accident, while some 20 other passengers suffered light injuries.

A spokesman of Merpati Nusantara, Akhmad Zulfikri, told the Jakarta Globe that Merpati was unable to comment before the findings of an investigation by the National Committee on Transportation Safety (KNKT).

Asked for any preliminary information on the cause of the crash, Akhmad said “I have no idea, we still need to wait for the investigation by the KNKT. The KNKT usually at least takes a month for its investigations.”

Akhmad said that the company was still focusing on the victims.

“But for sure we also want our customers to be loyal flying with us,” he said.

Merpati has something of a checkered safety record.

On August 2, 2009, Flight 9760 crashed in Papua, killing all 15 people on board.

In July 2010, passengers aboard an MA60 in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara were forced to evacuate after a short circuit filled the cabin with smoke.

In February 2011, a Merpati MA60 slid off the runway after attempting to take off from El Tari Airport. No casualties were reported.

On May 7, 2011, Merpati Flight 8968 crashed off the coast of Kaimana district, West Papua, killing all 25 people on board.

The incident again raises questions over the deal involving Merpati’s purchase of 15 Xian MA60s for $14.1 million. It was later discovered that airlines in the Philippines, Ghana and Nepal bought the same type of aircraft for $11 million, while it is understood that the airline considered canceling the deal after finding cracks in one of the plane’s vertical stabilizers.

This prompted China to halt a loan for an electricity development project in Indonesia. In response, former Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu was sent to China to renegotiate the purchase agreement.

Afterward, the government agreed to take a small loan from the China Export-Import Bank — amortized over 15 years with an annual interest rate of 2.5 percent — clearing the way for the deal to go through.

The purchase is currently being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO).

Lawmakers and aviation officials have questioned the use of planes that are not certified by the United States Federal Aviation Administration. The Indonesian government has argued that such a certification is unnecessary since Chinese transportation authorities have approved the planes.

Martin Hutabarat, a lawmaker with the Great Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra) called on the Transportation Ministry to assess the usage of MA60s as passenger airplanes.

“The ministry should evaluate them to prevent dreadful accidents like this,” Martin said on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the region, a Myanma Airways plane carrying about 60 passengers skidded off the runway at a regional airport on Monday.

Both propellers on the Burmese flag carrier’s MA60 were damaged in the landing at Kawthaung, in the southern region of Taninthari.

In mid-May a Myanma Airways MA60 overshot the end of a runway at an airport in eastern Shan State due to suspected brake failure, injuring two people.

Plane is only as good as the pilots flying them

If low budget and 3rd world country's who don't have up to standard pilot training crash then this is bad advertisement for plane also

China should this time do the full package deal not just sell the planes

I'm talking about after sales service and not be greedy in profits only otherwise without good customer service ARJ21 will not be successful

Russia-China widebody design center project moves forward

Russia’s United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) president Yury Slusar said at the Farnborough Airshow that the design center, which is developing new Russian-Chinese widebody aircraft, may be located in Zhukovskiy, Moscow Oblast. The final assembly will be in Shanghai, China,

reporeted.

In June, UAC and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) entered into a joint venture agreement to study the feasibility of designing a new widebody aircraft. The agreement stipulates the joint design, manufacture, marketing and after-sale support of new aircraft. The Russian-Chinese JV is expected to develop a widebody family, although the number of aircraft it will include was not disclosed.

Slusar said the cost of the project would be $13-$20 billion, adding the approximate project cost varies so much because the partners have not yet decided what will be included. The partners will make investments in equal portions.

The JV has already requested engine proposals from Rolls-Royce and General Electric, Slusar said, which are the only two companies that can provide the necessary engine of 35,000 thrust. Slusar said Russia and China are also considering their own engine development.

The new aircraft would have a capacity of 250-300 seats and will fly 12,000 km. First deliveries are expected in 2025-2027.

I have a lot of questions about this long in the making (since 2007) project.

What about COMAC´s 929 and 939 projects? will they be able to have that many projects at the same time? or this russian-chinese project is still in feasibility stage? how "political" is this project? will this project be for "research only" with chinese airlines in the end buying few planes? will chinese airlines willing to buy a large quantity of a semi-russian plane which is only intended to advance china´s aircraft tech industry?

In other news, the ag600 amphibious plane has been completed.

well, let's see how C919 turns out first. I don't see the need for a C939 unless as a vanity project. If C929 turns out to be around the size of a dreamliner, they can probably stretch it to A350-900 size. You probably don't need anything larger. Unless of course the market changes a lot in the next 15 years and something in the size of A380 or even the speculated 777-10X gets orders. At present time, it seems like only the middle eastern airlines fly them.
