Chinese ATGM discussion

any images of the EO sensor being lifted high up, above the height of missile containers?

none yet that I'm aware of. the closest is this picture which shows the pillar which the telescoping mount retracts into. since this is a NLOS missile, there is no need for the sensor to be elevated in most situations.

since its NLOS, there's little need for such a sensor at all. But as it does exist on the vehicle, there must be user's perceived need for self searching/self targeting. If so, the sensor MUST be able to look above the missile containers as its field of view would otherwise be miniscule.

the image provided should be enough evidence that the sensor can, indeed, be raised.

The AFT-10 is said to possess both the 10km ranged NLOS mode with man-in-the-loop control, and a 5km ranged fire-and-forget top-attack mode that needs direct line of sight to the target for a missile-lock.

That telescopic optronics mast is most probably needed for latter mode.

I read a post on another forum. It seems there is some confusion whether AFT-10 is fiber optic or wireless datalink. The poster in this picture says clearly that it is fiber optic. The 70km range CM-501g and WS-33 are probably wireless.

I understand the AFT-10 to be an ATGM while the CM-501g and WS-33 are SSM. They are different categories of weapons.

Well, even the AFT-10 is significantly larger than normal ATGM. At 2500mm, it is larger than the Japanese Type 96 which is officially credited with +10km range and estimated to be capable of 25km.

This Jane's article says AFT-10 has a 43kg warhead. But since it is wrong on so many ways, AFT-10 definitely doesn't have a turbojet engine, I wouldn't put too much faith in about the warhead weight either. But a missile that size is likely to have a warhead far larger than is necessary to take out a tank, especially given it top attack profile. I think it is a good guess that AFT-10 is multipurpose missile rather than strictly ATGM.

The two longer ranged missiles are in the same class as Spike NLOS.

What is the speed of the missile? Can it be effectively used against helicopters?

who knows. there are some speed number in the Jane's article. but with the obvious mistakes, I won't put much faith in them. PLA has specialized mobile AAW vehicles in any case.

Interesting thing about this, is that the camera or the optics are in the middle between the launcher. I wonder, are they planning on moving the turret which searching for a target or the optics are extendable and retractable like the TV News channel Vehicle with their camera or satellite dish
