What is the difference between aim-120d and 260? If the size is the same, how can it achieve more range? Can pla use the same tech to make pl-15 even more long range since pl-15 is a bigger missile?

JATM is a modernized improvement along the same path, which isn't using a 34 year-old form factor. It gets more range thanks to advances in metallurgy, propellant, materials science, etc. And of course everyone can use the same physics; how do you think PL-16 is both smaller and better than PL-15?

Less drag, more compact components(for example, aesa moved forward b/c it doesn't need space for gimbal)-> way more real estate for the engine.
How does it work? Maybe they fitted in 3rd pulse, for example; the range everyone expects matches quite well.

There were interesting tech options(throttling nozzle for SRF), but hard to tell if they made it there in time.

A Chinese military expert hints, PL-15 used by PLAAF maybe with a range of over 350km. :oops:

He talked with vendor in Zhuhai Airshow 2024, shocked by the real numbers. He said he won't give the audience the exact number he was told. But the first reaction after he heard the number is "How is that possible?!". The number is larger than any legend/rumors he heard of before.

Of course, he added, the AAM's actual range will be affected by jets' launch speed & altitude. But he still got shocked about the number.

Height = 60k ft M =2, target height = 20k ft M=2 head on?

Can you give a source? This sort of thing should have an obvious source. The most official information I've seen to date for the domestic PL-15 range is 200km+, but 350km is way too much more than that than I can believe without checking the source for myself.

Heh, if you believe the latest info out there, A Pakistani journalist claimed that the PL-21 has a range of 450km and will come with the J-35A:

Sorry, but the word "a Pakistani journalist claims" should immediately set off all the alarm bells, and it's best to forget about the report or not even post it!

How can a Pakistani - probably from the same league as those claiming Pakistan will receive its first J-35As before the end of the year (it's all based on "Believe me, brother! I know it") - post something like this with such conviction, while no other respected analysts have any confirmation of this weapon at all? That's simply stupid propaganda.

Relax, it's a claim nothing more or less. But what's interesting is his more realistic claim that the J-35A will be delivered by the end of this year or early next year. Pakistani pilots and groundcrew are already training in China.
