That's an extremely simplified and inaccurate view of the how outcomes in aerial combat are determined.
The least-nuanced explanation would be that the typical radar tracking range for fighter-sized aerial targets are far less than the max range of these missiles. You need to get a radar lock on your target before you can fire the missile.
It’s not just that. There is a huge difference in missile range depending on the altitude and relative velocity of the target. My huge difference I mean the range could shrink to around 20-30KM.
That seems very space inefficient.
What do you mean, vertical space require per missile in the weapon bay is still the same but it cuts down on the horizontal space so six of them can fit into a J-20 sized main weapon bay, seems pretty clever to me.
Fins folded up like a square would save even more space?
but if this simpler way of folding archives the same result to fit six it’s already fine
