wow, very rare clear news.
In Ordnance Technology’s interview with Wang Jiaying, the leader of the Missile Institute, he clearly answered that the self-use version PL-15 carried by the J-10 has a range of more than 200KM, and the foreign trade version of the PL-15E has a shorter range than the self-use version.

of this particular issue of Ordnance Industry Science Technology for one's interest.

Besides the mentioned AAM article, one may find other articles also quite informative.

Hi
if I may ask if PL15E is with less range for export
how will PAF defend J10cs against Meteor missile
either Pakistan must have local Chinese PL15
or meteor range can be less then Pl15
if not no brainer to face Meteor missile with less range
as J10c performance is also on stake
my apologies if my post is little off topic
thank you
That's an extremely simplified and inaccurate view of the how outcomes in aerial combat are determined.

The least-nuanced explanation would be that the typical radar tracking range for fighter-sized aerial targets are far less than the max range of these missiles. You need to get a radar lock on your target before you can fire the missile.

It’s not just that. There is a huge difference in missile range depending on the altitude and relative velocity of the target. My huge difference I mean the range could shrink to around 20-30KM.
