wow, very rare clear news.
In Ordnance Technology’s interview with Wang Jiaying, the leader of the Missile Institute, he clearly answered that the self-use version PL-15 carried by the J-10 has a range of more than 200KM, and the foreign trade version of the PL-15E has a shorter range than the self-use version.

Is it because of MTCR (or any other export regulation) or is it to safeguard Chinese technology?

was this the missile that the USAF referred to as the progenitor of the AAM missile gap? if it can be used by J-10 then i am guessing it can fit into J-20 as well.

Here is an interesting document that my answer why PL-15E has a max range of 145KM as opposed to PL-15's speculated range of around 180KM. The table lists the maximum range of AAM depending on the duration of time that elapses between the two pulses of a dual-pulse rocket motor. Under the head-on condition, the maximum range occurs when there is a 30 second gap between firing. If the gap between firing is 0s, the head-on maximum range is -- SURPRISE -- 145KM. What do you call a dual-pulse rocket motor with no pause between firing? A plain old single-pulse rocket motor.

This pretty much confirmed my suspicion that PL-15E does not feature dual-pulse rocket motor.

Looks like I was wrong about PL-15E not having dual-pulse. But I wouldn’t be surprise if the firing gap between the two pulses is effectively zero.

@huitong

I feel like this would be worth updating your entry on.

Confirmation of over 200km range for domestic variant is notable.

Yet another big disclosure in the interview is that the folded wing version of PL1-5 is under development, and J-20 will be able to carry six of them in its weapon bay.

So to speak, if customer is able to somehow tweak delay between pulses, you get extended range and NEZ. Basically you overclock your AAM for more performance.
