Chinese 96-A

True that. The russian have a 1130HP engine while the rest of the competitors have to do with 840HP expect for the Type 96B. Although the Chinese have a more powerful engine, the top speed is just a few km/h more than the T-72B3's. The T-72B3M's that the Russians use has a top speed of a whopping 10km/h more than the T-72B3! (67 vs 71 vs 77 respectively)

Also the Russians hold their own national tank biathlon competitions on the same course and the winner gets to participate in the international biathlon.

Don't forget Russia uses the T-72B3M with a retardedly powerful engine while giving everyone else the T-72B3. Throw a 1500hp engine in the 96B and the Chinese team can win gold every year too.

Of course, the tank is not the only determinant of performance seeing as the Indians get wrecked every single year even when they bring their own T-90.
LOLOL I didn't know that. That's insane; that's like hosting the Olympics and openly telling all the other teams have to run with sandals while your guys get Nike Sprint shoes. If anything, that's an insult to the Russian team by making them play with such an advantage. If a guy wanted to give me such an open disadvantage against him in a competition, I'd assume that that's him admitting he's not as good as I am but just wants to keep things interesting.

According to wikipedia, T-72B3 and T-72B3M use the same engine. Does anyone has the stats of the power-to-weight ratio of T-72B3, T-72B3M, and type-96B ??

Initially refurbished and upgraded T-72B3 tanks were powered by original V-84-1 diesel engine, developing 840 hp. However later production tanks were fitted with a new V-92S2F engine, developing 1 130 hp. This tank is also fitted with new tracks.

PWR is just power divided by mass. Both mass and engine power are open info, just do the division yourself.

The problem is that each military site gives different numbers. The site you mention gives type 96B a 1000hp engine, 42.8t and 65km/h.

But this one gives a 1200hp engine, 41.5 t, 65km/h

This site is interesting. it says that china possibly copied type 96B engine from ukraine. Also it mentions 1200hp engine, 43 t, 65km/h. But it states a PWR of 18.8hp/t, which is strange because 1200/43 doesnt give that number...

So... uhh... a word of advice, don't take someone called TankNutDave seriously on anything to do with the PLA.

I linked a source on a Russian tank whose specs on the Anglo-sphere are generally more reliable than specs on PLA systems. The same site I linked would not be credible with regards to PLA vehicles.

The 96B has a 1000hp engine derived from the new design on the 99A. This is confirmed by CCTV interviews with the engine and tank designers. The VT-4 is powered by a 1300hp engine hailing from the same family.

Did anyone ever share this video at any point?

I actually saw this on TV haha. The PLA, Armed Police and LE in general have a constant presence on TV, on many shows like this where the unique skills of people are showcased. there was another one with a LE K9 unit. There were others I have seen over the years in different programmes.

I see no problem with allowing different tanks to compete. Quite the contrary. AFAIK they also have an all Russian T-72B3 competition where only team performance is evaluated.

I would not be surprised if the Chinese had access to MTU engines to base their tank designs around on since IIRC some of the MTU tank engines are based on heavy truck engines. I suppose Ukraine is also a possibility since the T-84 tanks have diesel engines with similar performance.

However to reach a certain speed engine power is not enough and the suspension must be able to handle those speeds too.

Transmission is harder to get right than engine is. Consider all the surface types, navigation requirements, and performance expectations under huge loads, it has usually been the transmission on these tanks that have shown problems, not the engines.
