Chinese 96-A

It's a shame they got rid of moving shots. That's where Type 96 would really outshine the T-72BMs.

Shooting on the move is reserved for the finals.

On another note, the ballistic computer and laser rangefinder are not used during the biathlon. The crews know that the targets are between 1600-1800 meters away and have to use the stadiametric rangefinding and guesstimating to hit the targets. That's why you see lots of misses that would otherwise have been hits under normal circumstances.

Thanks. Didn't know this. That makes the hits even more impressive. This is a total test of crew ability rather than hardware it seems. Which would explain why some teams take 25 mins to complete with T-72 and some take 50+ with the exact same tank.

Waste time and money!

Indeed it is but so are many other similarly pointless things that governments do. At least this offers everyone a bit of light-hearted fun when they get together. Not to mention we get to see these tanks drive around and photographed pretty decently.

Tried looking for videos of the semi-finals race in this year's tank biathlon. Most seem to not show shooting closeups at all. Results also hard to find. Not that this competition is indicative of anything other than crew ability.

Functionally it's a small scale training exercise.
It can also be used as a way of finding flaws in training or occasional technical flaws.
Depending on how it's run. It can also be used for Mil to Mil relationships and expose soldiers and commanders to different doctrine, technology and techniques. As such it's a training tool.

There is also the internal moral and competition element to consider.

It would be considered quite an honour to be selected to represent China, so competition for places would be pretty fierce.

That would be a very good tool to boost troop moral and training effectiveness as crews compete with each other for a place on the team.
