if it had been the same 781 airframe, why would that be surprising? it is fairly common for aircraft manufacturers to retain a prototype or a pre-production aircraft that is relatively close to production configuration, and continue to use it as a development airframe for future changes and upgrades throughout the life of the aircraft.

Probably the latter. I can’t imagine why they would strip the dark gray paint off the very first prototype.
