What ever happened to the Y9 project, it was meant to be the most advanced cargo plane project in China, to challenge capability of the C130J

Supposedly it has had its first flight sometime last year, but we've not heard much since. I think they're trying to pump out for Y-8 GX and AEW aircraft first.

they have been saying that China has solved engine issues 5 years ago but still AC313 uses foreign engine, J10B still uses AL31, ARJ21 uses foreign engine and even Chinas new C919 civilian aircraft is going to use foreign engines

the engine seems to be Chinas achilles heel big time, even although they have thrown all resources at this problem for last 10 years

China must master engine technology

To be fair all recent J-11B is using WS-10. Progress is being made.

keep in mind that its natural that civilian planes have foreign engines. They need them to be competitive, and besides AFAIK china has yet to build any high-bypass engine (not need for it really. Only when china fields y-20, it will become a necessity)

It appears that J10b is just a prototype. its natural to have a mature engine

But you are right. Engines continue to be the bottleneck in terms of chinese mil tech

Russia will finalize the sale of 34 transportation helicopters to China by August, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.

The Mi-171 helicopters are being built in a plant in Russia's Buryat republic. The plant is a part of the Russian Helicopters holding.

The plant's CEO, Leonid Belykh, said the contract for building the helicopters was signed in 2010.

"This is not the first and hopefully not the last contract with our Chinese partners," he said.

Belykh said that Russian helicopter builders have been gradually shifting their cooperation with China from direct shipment to joint projects.

Russia and China have been negotiating on a joint venture for localization of assembly of the Russian helicopters, he said.

How curious, I thought there was already a local assembly plant for the Mi-17s?

Oh well, any helicopter development is good development... I'm still waiting for the indigenous 10 ton utility chopper, and the limited Ka-31s, Mi-17s and Z-9s simply aren't good enough for all arms of the modernizing PLA.
Not to mention the US and the Russians looking at coaxial and push rotor tech for the medium term future...

well, based on the recent CDF blog entry, it seemed like Mi-171 production did continue in Chengdu. Maybe the local production rate is not high enough yet. On top of that, we also have the Mi-46 project for China too.

By any day now... Do you mean there is talk it could emerge in imminent weeks (days??), or within months and years?

Or was it just a loose statement? :p

I agree with Blitzo .. if true - and here I would like to know why You expect it at "any day by now" !?? :) - that would be of maybe even bigger significance than the J-20 for the PLAAF.
