hope China and Russia can renegotiate a reasonable price on that project...
frankly, China's need for large transport planes is pretty damn urgent.

If china is developing an large transport plane by itself, why would it spent money on an russian plane? Besides, china really isnt in a hurry to have transport planes. It has no military assets abroad, and war with other nations isnt coming ANY time soon.

One nation's military doesn't need large transport plane for military functions only. Especially when the nation is as large as China. Remember the Sichuan earthquake... that is one of the wake up calls for China that she didn't had adequate transportation means.

Plus she had quite a number of smaller islets that at present moment depended on LST to sent relieves. If they have adequate large transport with more endurance, they could sent relieve to these islets easier.

Finally there are a couple of contested islands in which China desperately needed reinforcement. We cannot just expect her to sent their warships times and again just to replenish her troops or people stationed there. So transport is needed.

For that china needs much more helicopters then transport planes.

Its more cost-effective to sent ships to do that job. The islands are close to the chinese coast

You dont need to send warships to do that. Commercial ships can do that. China is not at war with any nation.

Helicopters cannot get very big and heavy equipments in larger quantity.

Yes, ship is cheaper, but much slower. In times of crisis, transport plane is needed and we do not want to wait till crisis (which will strike at anytime).

China is not at war, but sometime military presence is important, it would tell people to back off... or be hit bad.

Of course, when the day Chinese's large transport takes off, there is no reason not to acquire Il-76 anymore. But it's not like the current deal for more Il-76 is going anywhere anyway, so I disagree that money is being spent on Russian planes.

Besides, china really isnt in a hurry to have transport planes. It has no military assets abroad, and war with other nations isnt coming ANY time soon.
Firstly, Il-76 will need to be replaced sooner or later, so it is a good idea to get a replacement available sooner than later. Secondly, there are far too few Il-76 even for use domestically, so even though China doesn't have military assets abroad, it still needs plenty of transports to fufill domestic needs. Not to mention that AWACS and other special purpose aircraft require platforms as well, platforms that aren't available at the moment. Finally, the experience gained from designing and manufacturing large transports will be invaluable for Chinese aviation industry.

Now, if these explanations don't satisfy you, then I have one more: China designs large transports simply because it can.

For that china needs much more helicopters then transport planes.
They compliment one another, and are not mutually exclusive.

Even if we assume that this is true, that is not a good reason for China not to design its own transports.

yup, that's precisely where i am getting at. its still gonna take quite a while for China's own transport plane to commission, the PLAAF needs those 76 and 78's to alleviate the immediate demand such as platforms for AWAC or additional aircraft for the 15th army corp.

I think KJ-200 Y-8 platform more or less ease the demand for more KJ-2000.

after the initial batch of basic variant of KJ-2000 AWACs, PLAAF is likely gonna need additional Il-76 for upgraded versions. KJ-200 and KJ-2000 play complementary roles, they cant substitute for each other. besides, China will need a lot more KJ-2000 than just 4.

Here's something that has surfaced. I hope this isn't the planned debut of the prototype by the end of the year.
