US might contract SpaceX to do the Mars mission.
Thats not a possibility but a certainty.
One plan of SpaceX is to send components for a Mars base prior to Crewed launch.
They could task one of those launches to bring back samples.

Do you have any source to back the claim? By US I mean the state agency NASA. Also from the word "might" I think you know there is no such plan. I would not use the word "might" with "certainty" together anyway because they are logically contradictory.
And since we are talking about a 2026 mission, I wonder where is all the mission hardware for SpaceX to do it. Seriously I have never heard SpaceX has any plan to do it around 2026, will appreciate you to share the source of the information.
P.S. to clarify my post, I don't question whether there will be a crisis or not, I am wondering the response that you are saying.
