not bad...i think dog meat is a Chinese medicine. i dont really like the taste though.

maybe one day we'll get to enjoy good food in other branches of military
The Huajiang Dog is a very famous dish from Guizhou since the day of Three Kingdom period.

If you read Chinese, google "花江狗肉".

Ever wondered what the Chinese Space Venturers get to eat.

Positively First Class. It makes The Russian and American spacemen feel as if they are travelling in "Tourist Class":D

According to the newly published autobiography of Yang Liwei, head of China's first manned space mission in 2003, the crew's meals included dog meat from Huajiang county, which is renowned for its health benefits.

The meat is claimed to "cure high blood pressure, help build up old people's health, and reduce frequent urination," handy on a long voyage.

Yang Liwei: Head of Shenzhou 5, China's first manned spaceflight
In contrast, according to a Reuters article from last year, American space food runs to chicken with rice and macaroni and cheese, and Russians go for canned fish and borscht. The Japanese, of course, eat sushi.

A Chinese space menu from 2009 includes Huajiang dog, as well as some rather more appealing fare. It certainly sounds tastier than what the Americans get, although the actual logistics of cooking complex dishes in space is not explained:

Day One: Lotus root porridge, crispy tofu with spring onions, braised yellow croaker fish, pork ribs with seaweed, spinach with minced garlic.

Day Two: Spicy pig skin, braised duck neck, hairy crab with ginger, chicken liver with chilli, pine nuts with sweetcorn, three-flavour soup.

Day Three: Poached egg in fermented rice soup, Harbin sausage, Huajiang dog, baby cuttlefish casserole, eel with green pepper, spicy beans with dried tofu.

Apples, pears and oranges served with every meal, as well as rice, noodles, sweet potatoes.

Laika, the sole passenger of Sputnik 2 in 1957, was the first dog in space.

I believe China will launch the first orbital restaurant after accumulating food-related experience on the space missions. Hopefully I'll get to go in my life time :D :china:.

Does anyone know how the Chinese Space agency successfully pack goodies such as croakers and hairy crabs on space missions? Those are better than what I eat on holidays for God's sake! Are they freeze-dried?

Maybe the Kitchen staff could do a bit of moon lighting and offer their sevices to Richard Bransons "Virgin Galactic" venture:D

What are croakers?

Surely after 30+yrs floating around space, we must be able to provide food thats close to airline standard which is average at best.
Thats excluding Air Emirates and first Tier Asian airlines of course.:D

Haha I really like the cooperation with Virgin Galactic idea. I bet a lot of rich folks would enjoy the view a couple hundred miles above the Earth. The only problem would be zero-g sickness (that might kill their appetite lol :D).

Croakers are a type of food fish and they are named since they make a croaking sound. They are heavily prized in China and true croakers are very expensive these days. The croaker isn't as popular in the U.S. since they have a lot of bones (tiny ones) and are relatively hard to filet (you see them in Asian markets though). I wonder if the ground crew actually deboned the fish. If not the crew could have a really hard time chasing down the fish bones floating around in the capsule :D.

Trust the chinese to always come up with the best food to bring with them in whatever mission they do.

do you ever bother to read. its written on the first line.

The obvious undercurrents of bladerunner's post especially in light of his onerous history of postings is perhaps lost on the simpleminded. That's okay, don't worry about it, tough guy. :)
