China's SCS Strategy Thread

Well it's not a hunch so much as it's modus operandi that naval ships generally don't get involved in direct action where collisions are likely/standard. If anything they stay quite well far away.

I find it difficult to entertain the idea of seeking to provoke a naval vessel to enter the fray, especially when DDG164 itself was fairly actively maneuvering in the scenes in the video which should have had multiple chances to disengage or not enter the ruckus even if it was enticed.
As you said, the destroyer would try to disengage in this situation. This might embolden the Filipino crew even more.

I will be fascinated to hear from the grapevine what occurred on the PLAN end. I for one, certainly am not going to rule out the possibility of a CO being gung-ho.
Are you referring to CO of the destroyer? In PLAN's command structure, this shouldn't fall under his discretion.

I think you're stretching it here.

Yes, the CO of the destroyer.
Well, either the CO was being particularly gung-ho and not observing usual rules of engagement, or someone higher up the food chain gave the clearance to send a destroyer to play bumper cars.

Either way, I see few ways in which the destroyer could not have extricated itself from the situation, provoked or not.

How did they go to that situation in the 1st place? Like is there like graphics?

Sending here for comparison. There was a big hull breach below the water line too. It is why the ship was standing off balance. It took a lot of water

Maybe not really a PR disaster, but there definitely needs to be a lesson to be learned. Whoever in charge of 164 is obviously hotheaded and will not make the correct decisions if a wartime conflict actually occurs. And they need to be punished.

This is the cost of doing business if China wants to stand tall as a superpower.

Nothing to frown over or to get uncomfortable about.

If anything, get used to it.

Considering this happened fairly recently in the last 12 hours and no one knows the disposition of the vessels, I would temper your expectations a little.

Yeah, the west is going to have a field day with this one. Let's not forget what PH is, a US puppet, so we can figure out where are these provocations originating from. Though indeed i don't know why DDG-164 was charging in like that, "prepare for ramming speed!" style. Though maybe we don't have the full picture of what happened.
