As you said, the destroyer would try to disengage in this situation. This might embolden the Filipino crew even more.Well it's not a hunch so much as it's modus operandi that naval ships generally don't get involved in direct action where collisions are likely/standard. If anything they stay quite well far away.
I find it difficult to entertain the idea of seeking to provoke a naval vessel to enter the fray, especially when DDG164 itself was fairly actively maneuvering in the scenes in the video which should have had multiple chances to disengage or not enter the ruckus even if it was enticed.
Are you referring to CO of the destroyer? In PLAN's command structure, this shouldn't fall under his discretion.I will be fascinated to hear from the grapevine what occurred on the PLAN end. I for one, certainly am not going to rule out the possibility of a CO being gung-ho.
