great pictures. do you know who actually took these pictures? American surveillance aircraft? the quality is amazing, let's hope we have more coming.

Unfortunately, I don't know exactly who. But two of the three pics I posted are in Filipino media so I think it's not far fetched to attribute American surveillance who then passed them on to the Philippines.

I think they are two different islands. If you take a close look at the original buildings in the pictures, you will find out, that one building is on one corner of the island and the other one is on the opposite corner.

I suspect you are right, the water does not line up and the scale is actually wrong as well.

Different pic confirming its Dongmen Jiao / Hughes Reef. Those blue containers look to be living quarters given the windowns and what seems to be AC units on them.

I wish China would use an F-7 to intercept. More economical.

J7s, or rather, Mig21s, were never designed for such roles.

They're designed to be high-speed, high-altitude fighter jets.

Controlling of such aircrafts, considering the design, the lack of fly-by-wire system, and the ageing frame....I would say the chances of an incident will be much higher...

Roger that, single engine, over water,,,,, not as much fuel, well it starts to look worrisome...... and I know the F-35 is a single engine, but I can tell you, one engine, over water, at night????? no thanks, and I'd like to say I'll fly anything once???

...the real proof of the pudding will come if and when a Chinese maritime surveillance vessel either a) collides with, b) rams, or c) is, while engaged in a) or b) shot to pieces by a US coast guard or naval vessel while attempting to execute its self-defined responsibilities inside China’s self-defined non-territorial waters that also happen to be around a flotilla-infested Philippine or Vietnam-sanctioned oil rig.

Then the President of the United States gets to decide if he or she wants a collapse of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and a full-bore economic/sanctions war, kick the PRC to the curb in order to double down on the Philippines and Vietnam as America’s most important relationships in Asia, and for that matter, explain to the US public it is a matter of pressing national interest for the USCG to play chicken of the sea with Chinese ships thousands of miles from home for the sake of a Philippine or Vietnamese hydrocarbon play.

American hawks are setting the United States for a repeat humiliation/lost of credibility in SCS. China would never back down in SCS, just like Russian wouldn't back down in Ukraine. War in 2015 or further American humiliation?

American politicians need to realise that by pushing both China and Russia, you'll only end up pushing those two closer together. I believe that's bad for American national interests.

The last thing the US wants to see is a strong China-Russia relationship, or even alliance. The two are just so complimentary to each other. One lacks people and the other have too much. One has oil and gas the other needs them badly. One needs more consumer goods while the other produces too much consumer goods. Even in military stuff the two has so much to offer each other and there's so much to cooperate on.

Furthermore, by getting too involved in the SCS will only add to the burden of American people. Is this really a priority for the US? I believe the problems in Ukraine and the Middle East are far more pressing. In fact, China is accelerating construction work in the SCS while the US busily trying to find a way to fight the IS while avoiding a boots-on-the-ground war again. In addition, it doesn't look like Putin is ever going to stop whatever he's doing.

The US likes to mock the Chinese because we don't have "friends", or "allies". But, sometimes I think allies can be more of a nuisance than blessing. Not always, but it happens.

It is by now rather clear that many of America's allies are taking a free-ride. Be it those in Asia, or those in Europe.

Those in Asia hopes that America will counter China on their behalf and they can just save their efforts for it (anyway without the US they can't do much as well). Those in Europe hopes that America will somehow magically push Putin back.

Those in the Middle East? I'm not even sure you guys can call them allies. Who knows if the IS is actually funded by the Saudis or not?

Sometimes I, as a Chinese, pity the Americans. You've got a thousand problems at home and some people just hope you can solve another thousand problems for them. Meanwhile they will be saving their time and money and make more money.

With all the talks of anti-China and anti-Russia, S.Korea is soon going to sign a FTA with us. Japan-China trade is almost twice that of Japan-US trade. China-ASEAN trade has been growing exponentially. France still didn't revoke the Mistral Class deal. Even the UK, America's closest ally, recently announced that they're going to be the first country outside China to issue RMB bonds and make RMB one of their reserve currencies.

Going back to the SCS issue, what I really want to say is, Americans, please ask yourself, is it worthwhile if you do something? You may think of yourself as the Master of smaller allies, or Guardian of Peace, Democracy, and Freedom, but aren't those countries making use of that, too?

What's really in YOUR interest?
