China's SCS Strategy Thread

Are you telling me that Judith Miller didn't lie about the threat of WMD to push for the Iraq War to which lawmakers use to make the case for war? I guess she didn't lose her job either when no WMDs were found embarrassing the New York Times. Yellow journalism is not a conspiracy theory. Pretty fallacious argument to lump in yellow journalism with conspiracy theories in order to discount it.

We're way off topic, so let's drop it before Darth Vader raises this lightsaber.

Stewart Taggart has a plan to resolve SCS disputes. It's an interesting read, but probably unrealistic at the moment, because China is slicing up Philippines and Vietnam one salami at a time, and doesn't really need to compromise.

Arbitration, joint development, coordinated investment, shared infrastructure. The plan above could offer an “everybody wins,” face-saving solution to the increasingly dicey situation in the South China Sea. None of the points are novel. All are on the table or represent logical extensions to existing initiatives.

Infrastructure could be the key to solving the challenges above simultaneously. These include climate change, territorial tensions, accommodating the rise of China, encouraging energy market innovation and developing low-emission energy sources. Viewed this way, the growing crisis in the South China Sea may really be an opportunity. Handled correctly, it could represent a turning point in history.

A.Mace, I don't get what you're trying to say. What does what William Randolph Hearst's newspapers did more than a hundred years ago has to do US today? No major US organization is drumming for Sino-American war, not even the China hawks. The worse you could say is some US media and security experts lobby for greater US presence in support of her allies, but even then, you'll also have to say most of them caution against war.

Well stated Stoney.

china's door for negotiations are always open. if someone wants to talk the Chinese are up to it anywhere anytime. state councillor yang jiechi just visited Vietnam a week ago and met with the viet leadership. nothing concrete came out of it, both sides just restated their positions.

There are conflicting sources on CJDBY.net about whether China has taken control of the "Qiongtai Jiao (瓊台礁/琼台礁)" in

But CCG seems has been patrolling there for substantial time now, trying to fight for control against Malaysia. "che", who has been a reliable source for SCS issues, mentioned that a log was seen on the shoal, with "Sovereignty of P.R.C" carved. The log "was drifted to the shoal from Malaysian shores".

Sources claiming that China has taken full control of this shoal mentioned that this was a trade between China and Malaysia. People suspect that is why China was quite quiet when Malaysian started drilling in that area.

It is interesting to see that China does not limit its active claims to Vietnamese and Philippines.

That would be this little thing called "diplomacy". PH and Vietnam should try it sometime.

that's a nice picture. this is the best Chinese response to the situation in the SCS. china must continue with its own game plan and not let any other nation affect them. continue the construction at a rapid pace and scale, this is also a direct rebuttal of john Kerry's initiatives at the recent Asean regional forum in Myanmar.

I think those blue container like thing could be temporary housing for the construction crew.

Or it could be supplies, the workers could always sleep inside the ship anchored to the island construction site. Until the island is self sufficient enough with it's own running water, sewage, and electricity than you will start seeing housings and buildings for occupants to live in.
