to other posters: FYI, I'm not in Malaysia, but in USA; I'm not an arrogant self-righteous Westerner, as I wasn't brought up here & traveled extensively in E/S Europe, Asia, ME, & L. America; China with her extensive rail & road network is still not well connected with SE Asia. I'm not anti-Chinese, but anti-imperial hubris bias in general; in fact, I'm being pro-objective & consider every issue from all sides, regardless of any political or personal agendas.
From the earlier quote of the article with an old Chinese map, it's clear that China didn't bother to claim those SC Sea islands until the Europeans showed up there. Besides, semi-permanent presence of fishermen & others isn't all that's needed to claim them.

China want to connect their rail line to SEA But sofar only Laos take the offer. There is plan to built rail connection with Myanmar and Thailand. But due to political instability and elite in those countries eat up western propaganda to demonize China they are dragging their feet. In fact China has built rail line up to Myanmar border town Ruili in Ruili -Dali line
As well those border area are mountainous and very hard to built rail line It take a long time to built it . But it wont be profitable unless those line are connected to Rangoon. There is another line in planning from Kyakpau port to Kunming along the route of existing oil and Gas pipeline . The last government sign the agreement but now with the coup it is in question again.

The Dali–Ruili railway or Darui railway (大瑞铁路), is a

I don't know why you criticizing China claim on SCS when the western power habitually invoke Terra nullius to claim any island in Pacific or Indian Ocean and justify their holding to those island. I find it hypocritical Case in point Diego Garcia that UN has confirmed as belong to Maritius and yet Both British and US refuse to comply to UN ruling now this is real ruling by ICJ (International Court of Justice in Den Haag) and not private arbitration

@tphuang Sir here in the Philippines , American product is less visible except for Cars and Smartphone and both products are expensive. Even the Japanese and Koreans brand are being price in premium. In the Car segment the cheapest Japanese and Koreans Car accessories are spartan, while the Chinese car design had that European feel, comfort drive and premium interior. An example Geely Coolray Sport is price at $21,600 while its Japanese counterpart Toyota RAV 4 is price at $40,000, almost double the price. The gadget and accessories spec the Chinese outdone the Japanese by a huge margin with their cars equipped with all digital dashboard, sun roof and 360 camera as standard, while you have to pay extra when buying a Japanese car. It's a rip off and we the consumer don't believed that Japanese and Korean Quality demand a premium price. I'm a big fan so are my friends , Driving one make you feel like a Bachelor while driving my Toyota Prado and Fortuner make me look like a Family Driver :(

Oct 15, 2021 — The Coolray remains to be the best-selling Geely in the Philippines. In fact, the Chinese car brand shared that it was able to register ...
Saw two Geely vehicles otw to work. Thought it looked nice and was surprised to see them here.

thx for posting-that's what I'm saying! China today is no different than prev. colonial empires when it comes to the issue of the SCS claims- it's the law of the jungle with might makes right. That's why the ASEAN claimants turned to the US & their allies for protection.

Except you forgot this arbitration "court" is not sponsored by the UN, and China didn't participate. Which means whatever it's findings are not legally binding. The US doesn't even follow actual UN sponsored ICJ.

Also when China discovered these islands, the other countries didn't exist yet and definitely don't have sea keeping boats for discovery, the islands were actually no man's land. Whereas the Europeans and Americans just simply don't think anyone not white can claim land.

It was no man's land, settled by chinese fishermen, hence a legal part of Qing territory that the ROC and PRC inherited. It couldn't get any clearer that the PRC has a valid legal claim to these islands. Yet it's not enough for this guy who thinks the PRC is somehow exhibiting colonial behavior

I think in order to promote its own product, China should try to work with ASEAN countries like Philippines to build a local network of EV charging stations that conform to the Chinese standard. Once you get charging stations out there, it will be very easy to sell all the low to high end EVs they have. If you think about it, Toyota is paying BYD money to mass produce sub $30k BEVs for them so they can put the Toyota label on there

. At this pace, Chinese automakers are going to put the Japanese and Koreans out of business. Cars are very important to people. If you can help build local industries and sell good cars to people, this is a form of soft power. Phones, computers and apps.

This is not 2005 anymore. China has a lot of great things that it can share with its neighbors and help its Asian brothers grow. Industrially, it can help share its clean tech advantage, it's bio tech successes, its AI progress.

When the US would ban the car technology to China ?

Well China has more valid claim on SCS island than US or Brit on Diego Garcia since it was the fishing ground for Chinese fisherman eon ago. It was marked in ancient Chinese navigation map exhibit in library. It was used as marker for Chinese pilot to navigate SCS. At the end of the day it is might that make it right live with it. I don't think SEA is running to embrace US Mahathir famously said we don't afraid of China because we know from history that China does not have colonial mentality in their DNA unlike the WEST . China Cheng He armada landed 5 times in Melacca but there is no attempt to colonize Melacca sultanate, He further said Portuguese come in 1520 and right away they bombarded Melacca and occupy it. So did the Dutch and British. He said he thank China for it . Philippine is an exception in SEA It is a country founded by Mestizo elite and they don't have strong cultural heritage other than Sulu sultanate in Mindanao. They grafted their culture to Spanish then US so they identify with their occupier since that is the only one they know. In other word colonial mentality. Other than Phillipine maybe Spore no other country in SEA suck up to US

This is very different from your original point. You were originally try to pass with a supposition that somehow "China's interior is not developed". Now you are trying to sneak through with something like "China's transportation network is NOT well connected to S.E.A.", if you were not caught bluffing by us, your false claims would have taken root in this forum.

As for the Arbitral Tribunal, why don't you go and take a look at the past rulings this "Tribunal" has given? You will know how meaningless this thing is.

thx for posting-that's what I'm saying! China today is no different than prev. colonial empires when it comes to the issue of the SCS claims- it's the law of the jungle with might makes right. That's why the ASEAN claimants turned to the US & their allies for protection.
You must be blind! China today is totally different from colonial empires. Colonial Empire strived to colonize old countries on popular trade route they themselves couldn't host profitable trade via peaceful means. This is because the world was NOT even functioning as a wholistic community networked by trade. Their standards were even unified. For Colonial Empires, uninhabited land and islands were NOT valuable in itself. It was the society and economy on those land that represents value.

Do you see China really going after the valuable part of S.E.A. with military power and resources? Do you see Chinese military sacking the rich and populated cities in S.E.A., striving to subjugate the people and regime there, in order to extract wealth? Do you see China setting up colonies in main cities and living areas in S.E.A., with intention to control people, land and resources around it?

The most you can criticize China on this matter is "great power chauvinism". To be honest, great powers are always chauvinistic, as long as they exist as such.
