Never going to happen, the US will pressure a couple of countries to reject it. Since US only operate nuclear subs and carriers.

It cuts both way. China will also not be able to use South China Sea to hide her ballistic missile nuclear submarines.

And laws are meant to be ignored by big powers anyways.

Also doesn't it mean China is more likely to hide her subs there? Since officially US can't send subs to go hunting there since they don't have diesel subs.

The last I checked, all the US helicopter carriers, destroyers, frigates, LCS and submarine chasing airplanes are still convention powered.

Furthermore, I do not have the detail count, but I believe many, if not most, US FON operations in South China Sea were conducted with convention powered ships.

Without carriers or subs, anything else the USN sends into the SCS might as well be target practice for the PLA if it really turns into a shooting war.

Remember, FON is all about intimidation and shows of strength. Sending in flotillas that doesn’t worry China in the slightest is just a massive waste of fuel.

Given that those islands are close to Woody Island and near the numerous bases in Hainan, what does that additional island actually add?

The three SCS bases are some 1000km from Hainan, so it means they create their own air superiority bubble.
