China's SCS Strategy Thread

It does not matter what Philippine says at this point. They can take back their words completely and it wouldn't matter at all. Philippine was a pawn used for starting an arbitration process. Once the process began, Philippine is not useful any more.

The court of arbitration's usefulness will also come to and end within a few weeks. The court is only useful up until the announcement of a decision. This decision could be a 100% recital of Harry Potter, but it would be spun as a legal justification by the US to start "policing actions" in the South China Sea. That is the end game here.

In other words, this is nothing but another "Saddam has WMD".

We expect things to really blow up after July.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged Japan not to "hype up" the South China Sea issue.

Spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks when asked about a comment by Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Shinsuke Sugiyama on Monday.

Sugiyama said Japan was "closely watching" for the tribunal ruling on the South China Sea arbitration case initiated by the Philippines.

"Some people from the Japanese side have been fanning the flames of tension, and deliberately provoking confrontation among countries in the region," Hong said.

Hong added that Japan has a disgraceful record in terms of the South China Sea, which China hopes will not continue.

"We hope countries in the region will be highly vigilant of Japan's moves," Hong said.

Two scenarios are possible: China ignores the ruling and carries on as before. Or an irate Beijing escalates the tension in the region, calling Washington's bluff.
Anyone good with Google Map to check if there are lots of construction and support ships loading up in Chinese ports? I wonder if we'll soon see an artificial island over Scarborough Shoal.

My read is that everyone in Asia is concerned/worried about the breakup of the European Union and global economic contagion.

So it's not a good time for something to flare up in the SCS.

Hague also found George W. Bush and Dick Cheney guilty of war crimes. Did that impact the U.S. in any significant way?

Bush43 and Dick Chaney are guilty of acting on bad intelligence, but not of war crimes. However, I take your point on The Hague's tinker's damn.
