I think you got it opposite, shooting a spy object over its territory is the right of a country but not shooting a civilian object, therefor strong protest is the right response. If your response is muted, people will buy the theory of spying.

It is just a dog and pony show. Who gives a fxxx. After Pelosi, any House speaker visited to Taiwan is irrelevant. That's why Pelosi is so insisted to be the first to visit Taiwan in decades.
CPC need to learn about the time when they need a strong respond or be nice.
This balloon incident is partly China fault, they should be upfront about it as preventive measure. It's not like they didn't know that US want something to fit their narrative of China threat to justified their expansion. Here CPC hand them on a plate.

Which is all the more baffling, when you consider the current response to the balloon floating over Latin America right now, where Chinese authorities have reached an understanding with local authorities and it's barely making a splash.
I don't think apologising is the right course of action, but the Chinese gov definitely could've muddled the waters via not labelling it as a unmanned airship, quicky make a statement before the western media went crazy with their theories, we will see what the US gov choose to release when they finish recovering and analysing the wreckage, if all this came from a PhD project it would really be hilarious.
The MFA people are composed of over the top serious people that doesn't seem to understand or have seriously studied the PLA concept of intelligized, informatized, cognitive warfare domain. If they have read and understand the PLA intent then the MFA people are just wasting time.

US doesn’t need justifications it does what it wants as past events have shown.

Why should China apologize for a civilian balloon? Did the US apologize when its actions violate China’s Sovereignty?
In actuality US is looking paranoid and China has stated it reserves the right to take the same measures. US’s goal is to go after China, it doesn’t care about looking aggressive and may even pat itself on the back for it. The relationship has to get worse before they can get better.

Just lol. Then they could've just called it the Devious Oriental again using reverse psychology in a bold frontal attempt at espionage, or something. I feel like Chinese people have this pathology where they're too honest and keep trying to reason with people who'll always lie, thinking it'll change their behaviour. I've long said any "reputational considerations" on China's part are completely braindead, whatever they do the western propaganda machine will paint its picture maximally bad anyway, so they might as well mercilessly take the action with the highest utility. They're incurring the punishment without receiving the reward, so to speak. Arm Russia, copy American patents, sell fentanyl to Mexico. These are all things MIC media's already blaming China for, why not actually follow through and derive the benefits then?
