Hu is cool but he makes some very boring speeches.

In any general election the current leadership don't stand much chance with their lack of TV charisma. What I would like for China actually is an elected figurehead chosen from party ranks, by the general public. Call him Chief Communication Official or something ;)

It's just because I want to be reverse of Britain :D

I think all CCP speeches are boring. One seems to notice that the CCP has this sort of Communist-Speak with special words like "reactionary", "seperatist", etc,. The really important part is to read between the lines and discern what they actually mean. Its like passing a coded message, trying to mean something by saying another.

I don't remember much when Deng made speeches, but I have transcript of his speech from 1992, which I thought was riveting. It was an internal party speech, so that made me think if they're this interesting internally, they treat non-party as little children..

I have the link you can google translate it:

He uses short, pointed phrases so the translation is a bit gibberish. The original Chinese is very powerful.

Galvanizing of the CCP

1. The tactical defeat of the CCP in Jiangsi forced Mao to do the long march.
2. Many died during the long march, it took them through Yunnan, western
Sichuan, skirting briefly the border with Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, and finally
Shaanxi. Suprisingly, this was the same invasion route Khubilai took to invade
the Song !
3. During the long march, the CCP took in many from China's national minorities, particulalry from the Mongols, Tibetans, Yunnanese, and Hui.
This was when Mao and his colleagues knew the value of the minorities.
4. My father in law mentioned that one of Deng's favorite dishes is the famous Mongolian roasted whole lamb. Everytime Deng visits Nei Monggol
and Dongbei, this is always what is prepared for him. One time my father in law had a chance to talk to Deng, this was way back in the mid 50's, and asked why Deng liked this Mongolian delicacy. Deng replied that this reminded him of his trials during the long march.
5. The long march is pretty similar to Genghis' march out of Mongolia after his defeat under the hands of his godfather Wang Khan. Out of 50,000 people
only less than 1000 survived. He eventually settled north of Hulun Buir , along
the banks of the river Baljuna. This was where he revived his strenght.
The Genghis Khan TV series talks a lot about this. Most western films and
documentaries never mentioned this important point in GK's life.

MORAL LESSON: DO NOT FOOL AROUND WITH PEOPLE THE LIKES OF MAO,
DENG, AND GK!

Mongolian whole roast lamb - recipe

1. Use a young ewe, not more than 1 year old
2. after doing what needs to be done( like removing the wool, and degutting)
3. marinade with herbs and kumiss (mongolian mare's milk wine) bury under
the earth for 1 day.
4. roast lamb, takes around half a day.
5. serve lamb , no chopsticks used here, just knives and hands normally served with sesame pancakes and kumiss. debone and serve
6. use bones to make soup , drop in liver and kidneys and most of all
lamb's head.
7. Serve soup as last entry
may miss a few points here and there but this is the way in a nutshell.
Friend of mine from Fairfield California, had a big picnic with a small
Nadaam last year, and was able to do this successfully.
( leftover meat could be sliced up and used for zhongbao yang rou, fried
lamb slices with onion and garlic) The lamb has a strong smell, however
after several years in Inner Mongolia and Mongolian Republic, now am used
to it.

There's aother important dynasty that hasn't been listed. I vote for the Han dynasty. Why chinese call themselves Han people? Because of the glory it brought to them.

My vote for Han Dynasty. Apart from the reason given by Jason_she, Han Hun war was one of the most remarkable war in Human history. Hun was the major Northern threat to Han China, for centries, Huns kept disturb China's Northern provinces and caused massive property and life loses. Since 133 BC, Emperor Wu of Han fought back. He started a full scale war against Hun. The war lasted for about half century, Hun losted over half of its population, and seperated to East Huns and West Huns.

East Huns surrendered to the Han Dynasty, and West Huns were forced to flee to the west. However, the weakened Huns were still managed to defeated some United armies of Middle East and Eropean tribes on their way to the west, and finally settled down in Don River Valley in nowaday Russia. Their successor, Attila (406 -453), also know as the Scourge of God, slashed the Europe and caused mass distruction and huge life loses. Now you can imagine how powerful the Han's army was. Han's cavalry was full equipted with stirrups, and crossbow was a standard issue of its army.

I bet to differ your explanation on why Chinese call themselves Han. It was not because Han dynasty brought glory to them. It is because they are a race call the Han race. In the past, there are different races in China, the Qin, the Zhou, etc. Han at that time is also consider as a small country. Qin conquered all the states at that time, and Han and Zhou rebel later.

Finally Han won and reunite the country.

Beside all this, I vote for Han too.

As far as I know, nearly all the chinese people believe the statement that I had said. Yet, I am for the first time to know another statement that you mentioned. But in fact, it was other minority nationalities like Jin,Hun that first called the chinese people Han people. Chinese themselves hardly used the call until the modern times. So there is another statement. Some people considered it was the father of china----Sun Yat-sen who used the call to arouse the chinese people's anger towards the Qin goverment.
Further more, as the result of the victory in the war against Hun, Han was famous in the Central Asia. So the people lived there called the relevant things in Han dynasty Han. And they spreaded it to the west. So maybe it is another likely origin of the answer.
