China should purchase CH-47 Chinook

It would be nice to see something in the class in PLA service for sure, but China's helicopter industry is small and could not focus on heavy helicopters like CH-47s at the point, so it's not really useful to get one for research now. And of course, you will have America screaming.....

Actually from reliable sources I've heard, China did try to negotiate with Boeing to purchase of the Chinook, however it was disapproved by the US goverment, cosidering it to be a threat if tthe Chinese use it to transport troops across the Taiwan-Straits.

heavy helicopter is not something urge for china at the moment while money could be better spend for more WZ-10 gunship and Z-8F median transport hel.

Z-10 is good, but no match compared to the Apache. Once the Z-10 enters service, US may deliver the Apache to Taiwan, wasting all the effort spend on time and research.

I don't believe it would be a waste since the China doesn't have any modern indigenous attack helo. China need to start building its own attack helo, even though it might be inferior (not by much). IMHO, it a great first step.:china:

Would China use the Varag with this attack helicopter? hence the slow progress on the carrier refit programme. They may be timing to have them both put in service at the same time.

thanks

What? Why would Taiwan possessing Apaches negate the effectiveness of Z-10? Does the Apache have the magical power of making other helicopters useless?

Military research defintely isn't a "waste" just because your competition have better hardware. It simply isn't a zero-sum game.

None of us really now how the Z-10 would compare with AH-64 so we cant assume straight off that its completly inferior and useless against the AH-64. If its a waste of time then why bother modernising, why waste money on all this military equipment if its behind the US in technology terms. Your post seems uneducated and single minded.

Never underestimate opponents the J-10 blew expectations, moving from Soviet based era fighters to domestic modern fighters in short 17 years, with the issue of internal wreak from Culutural Revolution

But the J-10 is highly dependent upon Soviet Material. anyway getting back to the original topic (Chinooks), the US wouldn't sell china them. The US currently views China as a enemy not as a friend, even though they conduct lots of trade together. If the US sells Chinook helicopters it likes basically that the US is funding both China and Taiwan to fight a war against each other. Thats not nice is it. The US can only pick one side, and they've clearly picked Taiwan as their unofficial ally.

The J-10 does not use any Soviet material except for the engine which was specially tailored by the Russians for it. Even then that would soon shift. Everything else about the plane has been locally designed and manufactured, with arguable foreign advisement.
