This is a true story.

My friend John, he got accepted to engineering school at UofT.

Forget all the details about how to get in, just some engineering studies needed a higher mark.

Getting in was already a big thing a big deal. Or so we thought.

His mom one day, "Ai ya, ah John! Got only 82.0%!" She was lamenting that he did not get into the harder engineering program.

John said, "82.1% mom! 82.1%!"

(This was a loooooong time ago, forget the exact figures).

That was so funny. I could never forget that.

:D

Sounds like horrible parenting...
Suboptimal I think but not horrible. You need to leave some words to describe parents that leave their kids to their own devices and become houligans or criminals. They're trying too hard, which is far from being the worst crime. Their kids will succeed in life; I have no reservations of that but just perhaps there was a way to do a little better with a lot less.

My wife and I plan to observe very carefully to see what our kids take to, perhaps do some fun intro courses, before we pick up on what our kids are good at, 1-2 things per kid, and develop just those things so that each person can have a hobby that s/he develops in a life-long pursuit to a level that truly wows the crowd. We think that's much much more valuable than being mediocre at 8 different things which will all get dropped and become an "Oh, I did that as a kid" sidenote as they become young adults.

How about "misguided parenting". By having a kid take on 6-7 different after-school hobbies, there will be a high probability of burnout across the board and veering into lying flat territory in the worst case, or just being mediocre at everything in the most likely case.

Focusing on 1-2 things is optimal, I agree.

First gotta foster the interest. Then worry about performance. I for one am glad all the tutoring went down. It gives space for kids to foster interest first. There are plenty of time in teenage years to catch up in performance. I was the 'stupid' kid early on, but when I got more serious performance caught up quick.

The reality is most people aren't able to effectively focus on things every day in and day out. They will have lapses in concentration, burn-out, and so on. So there's a lot of space to catch up that grows ever more possible as you grow older. More and more people mentally drop out, devote less time, etc. on these interests. If can you focus and get serious, you can catch up on most things very quickly.

Won't work against the geniuses though, because they were the ones that were able to effectively focus day in and day out, but those aren't the vast majority of people you meet / compete against.

This was literally my story as well (school too)

A loooooong time ago, when my marks were submitted (Fall term + mid winter marks), my average was about 85 or so

After going through my report card, my mom started crying and saying I will never get into a good school or program with these kinds of marks. Of course I got in just fine, but it was a rough ride, lol.

That's one way to marry your bride.

FB_IMG_1702425739470.jpg

Context: The bridesmaids refused to open the door when the best man asked for red packets (one of the procedures for the Chinese wedding ceremony), so the best man threw two smoke grenades into the bridesmaids' room to smoke them (the bride and bridesmaids) out. The incident happened in the city of Heze, Shandong last Friday.

What a waste, one is enough. Or a flash bang.
