Recently, news that mahjong players can become athletes by playing mahjong well has caused a stir on Chinese social media platforms. Simply put, any mahjong lover can register as a professional player and continue to advance through various competitions until he or she becomes a "master."
The International Mahjong League and the Hangzhou branch of the Chinese Chess Academy jointly established a sports rating center and issued a statement on mahjong skill rating management measures on November 5. The statement said that after registering personal information through the system and answering questions online twice, one can be certified as a Level-1 amateur. At present, the system has developed the Chinese-standard mahjong, Riichi mahjong, Sichuan mahjong grade certification. Due to the overwhelming demand, the registration platform has crashed. "If mahjong can be graded, my parents would not be bored," a netizen joked. "As the 'quintessence of Chinese culture,' it is a sport enjoyed by all Chinese men, women and children. And this sport must be the most competitive one!"
