Editor's Note:

China's modernization has been an epic journey over the last decade. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has become an attractive destination for many foreigners. Many such expats in the country have fulfilled their career aspirations, while some have found love and started families in China.

Why do they choose to live in China? How do expats in China view and interpret China's achievements and persistence measured from various

I dislike the label "expat" which is almost always exclusively applied to western white people. These people are simply white collar migrant workers, and in many cases economic refugees. Call them what they are.

Expat are people who stay only for a degree or something similar and then return to their homeland. Immigrants stay for longer periods of time and take up jobs.

I think among both the populations of western emigres to China and vice versa, there is a very roughly speaking, half and half mix between both groups.

The construction and operation contract of high-speed railway linking Ningbo and Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang Province was finalized between China Railway Construction Corporation (CRRC) and local government of Zhejiang, CRRC announced on Sunday via its official WeChat account.
The settlement of the contract means that the world’s longest subsea high-speed railway will soon enter its construction phase.
The Ningbo-Zhoushan railway has total length of 76.396 kilometers, starting from Ningbo East station, eastwards to Jintang Island, Cezi island and ends at Zhoushan Island. Bridges and tunnels account for a combined 90 percent of the entire railway with 36 bridges and 17 tunnels.
The railway will cross the 100,000-ton-level of Jintang ship lane under the water via a 16.18-kilometer-subsea tunnel. CRRC will apply large shield tunneling machine to overcome the challenges including a high volume of water traffic and complex undersea conditions.
The Ningbo-Zhoushan railway will be an important component of local “1-hour-transport circle,” which will accelerate Zhoushan to join the Belt and Road Initiative and Yangtze River Economic Belt.
The contract covers 36 years of cooperation period which includes six years of construction period and 30 years operating the Ningbo-Zhoushan railway.

I've not seen this usage you're describing. Anyway it is not relevant to what I'm saying.

Global South person working in a Global South country => Not referred to as expat
Global South person working in a Western country => Not referred to as expat
Western person working in a Western country => Not referred to as expat
Western non-white person working in a Global South country => Maybe. I've never heard it myself.
Western white person working in a Global South country => Expat

See the pattern?

Expat is a word some people use to make themselves feel special. No need to indulge. Just call them person of X nationality and Y profession working in Z country, i.e., a migrant worker.

just an ordinary university in China.

Hail China's rise
It's rather easy for westerners to forget/ignore that life is pretty similar wherever one goes, even in a lot of places that are so called "totalitarian hellholes". Life tends to be rather ordinary just about everywhere outside of active warzones. These videos help pop those media bubbles that surround people.
