Superhero movies unlikely to be released in China – media

The new ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Black Adam’ movies are expected to be blocked by regulators

Beijing is expected to snub Hollywood’s latest superhero blockbusters, 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' and Dwayne Johnson’s 'Black Adam', as China continues to block US access to its film market, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Сhinese movie industry insiders told the outlet that the two films are believed to have little chance of winning the approval of local regulators, which would cut Disney and Warner Bros. out of millions of dollars in potential revenue.

Although Chinese regulators have not announced any decision and seldom comment on the reasons for denying a foreign film access to the nation’s market, it is believed that Marvel movies, such as the 'Black Panther' series, are subject to a “de facto ban” in the country, the outlet said.

While Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ managed to earn $629 million during its Chinese release in 2019, beginning with 2020’s ‘Black Widow’, the last half dozen Marvel titles have failed to make it on to Chinese screens at all.

Some have speculated that the ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Eternals’ movies were banned due to actors on those projects making comments that “seemed to disparage” China, THR said. For ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, the reason was thought to be that the Statue of Liberty, a “potent symbol of American political values,” was featured too prominently.

Fans believe that censors have also taken issue with the openly gay characters in ‘Black Panther 2’, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, and Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’.

Hollywood studios had previously cut scenes with gay characters out of their movies for the Chinese market. Disney, however, has recently decided not to remove gay content for the sake of appeasing regulators in foreign countries.

An executive at a major Chinese movie theater chain reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter that his company has outright “stopped hoping” that ‘Black Adam’ will secure a theater release in the country, as it features actor Pierce Brosnan, who was censored in China after posting a photo with the Dalai Lama – a figure seen as a dangerous separatist by Beijing.

With fewer Hollywood productions making it to Chinese cinemas, Artisan Gateway reports that ticket sales in China have dropped 35% this year compared to 2021. Nevertheless, China remains the second-largest film market in the world.

Chinese ppl aren't living in the 1990s... Who tf goes to a theater when you can just stream online and sit at home? The CN cinema market is negligible, mostly older ppl who are unfamiliar with technology go there.

You can defintely see any of these US state sponsored movies in China, just through livestream and not cinema. For cinema companies, the most important thing is that a movie will sell, otherwise its not worth using limited screening time for it. And given the increased public attention on US aggression, maybe cinema companies smartly judge that having ham-fisted American propaganda on screen will not sell.

Sometimes statements need fact checking ...

China's domestic box office in 2019 was US$9 billion
second only to the US domestic box office in 2019 at US$11.3 billion

If US$9 billion entertainment market is negligible, then so is the US entire movie-cinema industry too?
Yes, I will be the first to agree that streaming is becoming the dominant platform but do not forget that streaming is both TV (serialised content) and Movies. Historically, the TV industry has always been waaaaay bigger than the movie industry but that hasn't stopped the movie industry experiencing healthy growth up till the Covid Pandemic.

Whether one prefers to enjoy a movie on a phone, a home theatre or a cinema is really up to personal preferences and plans, not reduced to a "older ppl unfamiliar with tech" demographic surely? Do dating couples no longer go to the movies and scheme the whole time trying to hold the partner's hand or put their arms around the shoulder (keeping it PG) or is the practice of 告白 so practical that one only goes to the movie for the movie's sake? Surely people still do go to the cinema for other reasons besides not being tech savvy?

Personally, i still bring the family out for action movies where the home theatre set up doesn't quite cut it or just simply for a night out. I have kids in their teenage years starting to fumble their way round the whole dating minefield ... heavens forbid they not go through the magic of spending an entire week's allowance in a movie not caring what happens on screen. "Netflix and chill" is just kinda crass and excuse me but I want to use the room and binge watch House of Dragon now that the season is complete.

You caught me exaggerating to make a point. Let me just put the points without any flowery language around it:

1. Despite overall larger economy, China has a smaller cinema industry than US, that shows that Chinese public avoids cinema more compared to Americans.

2. Due to limited audience, domestic cinema firms need to know that films will sell decently well. Any insanely overtly America propaganda films (like shit literally named Captain America, imagine how retarded that is) is unlikely to sell and so it is just smart business decision to not screen them.

A list of protests happening in china in 2022, yesterday there was an anti lockdown protest was going on in china.

B-Bu-But didn't the West have been saying that protests of all sizes and forms are strictly prohibited in China, and that any signs of protest would be responded with Chinese tanks rolling over those about-to-be-protestors immediately?
