China Flanker Thread III (land based, exclude J-15)

We've seen the suspected photos of the J15B w/ the radar upgrades, so why is it that so many J16s have been produced without the same consideration? I ask with the mindset of a networked fighting force, so if some birds can't see the same way as others, whats the point?

Please tell us what you know about the J-16’s radar (especially with new colour radome)?

I don't 'know' much of anything besides what we've seen from photos. I've 'heard/read' that people suspect the 15b radar to be an active array, and a lot of western enthusiasts claim that the use of older, passive arrays could be a 'downfall' to the potential of the aircraft. With the supposed implementation of the active array on the J15b, I find myself wondering why the J16 chassis does not implement the same suite.

Aren't the J-16s equipped with AESA radar arrays since its introduction into PLA service?

Looking at some articles, I see that you are right. The J16 is supposedly carrying an active array radar. That ends my question with the J16 radar, thanks.

This points towards another question about the J15b.

What is the J15b radar improvement over the J16 being that we see pictures of the front of the chassis being physically different than that of the other aircraft?

We don't know.

But they are different aircraft, developed at different times, with slightly different roles, and with completely different basing (land based versus carrier based).

Both are AESA, but there's no reason for us to think they are using the exact same radar.

It’s less likely to be “an improvement over the J-16” and more likely to be just a totally different radome (and possibly nose structure) design. I’d even go so far as to say that the J-16 and J-15B are parallels on different branches of the flanker tech tree instead of one being the successor of another: one is derived from J-11BS and the other from the J-15 which in turn is a mix of the J-11B and T-10K4 prototype. They’re just different and I think that’s all there is to it. The angled radome is first utilized on the J-11D so my personal theory is that the J-15B has certain aspects coming from that, but as to WHY the change was made I have no information and no idea.
