So I listened through Shilao's recent podcast. Much of which is regarding Russia/Ukraine and lessons learnt.
They commented extensively on how Russian flankers like Su-30SM and Su-34 do not even have MAWs to protect themselves from these missile attacks. Starting with J-11B, all the new Chinese fighter jets have MAWs. Even the upgraded J-11As have UV MAWs. We should expect to see more old PLAAF aircraft going through MLU to get MAWs (think J-10A).
They also mentioned that J-16s are doing a lot more A2G exercises than people think. We've only seen pictures of J-16s with rocket launchers and dumb bombs, because that's what were taken when they doing some training with it before their competition in Russia (AviaDart??) and others. They commented that J-16s did well with the rocket and dumb bomb attacks (highest score in the history of competition) because they had good avionics and the pilots are well trained.
So even though we have not seen J-16s in too many ground attack photos, we should not assume that they are deficient here.
